These days I try to stay away from social media and mainstream news outlets. Still, it was impossible not to hear how much car insurance had gone up, naturally, I was dreading my renewal date in early December.

As expected, my renewal quote shot up to £1008 from £540. However, after a lot of messing about with comparison sites, I have managed to get my insurance down to just a smidge over £600.

Context -

ASL - 35/M/Arse end of nowhere
Car - BMW M2
Occupation - See profile name

I'm interested to know if anyone else managed to get a reasonably priced insurance policy this year.

Side note - I would also be interested to know who the demographic for DirectLine is. They have always been very expensive for me, but this year was particularly amusing, as they quoted me over £6k laugh.

I similarly live in a rural area. I have 4 cars which I insured in July this year and managed to keep the renewal increase to around 10% with a session with the meerkats, which seemed fair enough.

A couple of my renewal quotes from the incumbent insurer were only a little more than the previous year, others were taking the proverbial so got sacked.

I too got a quote from Direct line... not quite as extreme as yours but well over 150% higher than the quote I went with. I can only imagine they hope their "we don't appear on price comparison sites" strapline will deter the unwary from looking for a quote elsewhere.

The renewal for my two cars (350D ML and E350 Cab) was nearly 1700 quid up from just under 900 quid last year.

Put them in a multi car policy with LV, with lower excess, and exactly the same cover, 902 quid.

I'm 50 with 10 years NCB on one and 9 on the other, and live in a small town in Kent and am a company director.

Direct Line wanted about 4 grand!!!!! Don't think I'll bother with them again, as every time I get a quote from them, 1 it takes forever to fill out the quote with my details, and 2. They're always the most expensive by miles!

Just got what I think is a really good deal.

I live on the west coast of Ireland, full no claims and just turned 60.

The classic policy on my 1988 735i was up for renewal at 315 euro.

I've also just bought a 2002 E46 M3.

Eventually found a co that classed the M3 as old enough for classic insurance and they quoted 290 euro for it, so I also asked them about insuring the 735, no problem sir we can add to the same policy for another 71 euro!

So.
1988 735
2002 M3

Both insured for 361 euro.

Nope, approx £200 up to £325 this year, in percentage terms an obscene hike. Tried all the car comparison websites and couldn't beat the renewal quote so stayed where I was. Perhaps the increases are worse on lower premiums, I live in Dorset in one of the lowest premium areas and drive a bread and butter 3 series diesel.

The toothless FCA have been plugging their "Consumer Duty" initiative this year (I work in financial services) yet have again done absolutely diddly squat about the whole insurance renewal fiasco. Seems their direction that existing customers should not be quoted more than new customers has been mostly ignored by the insurance industry, yet they've done nothing other than fine one company I think (Direct Line?).

Similar profile to yourself in terms of ASL.

Last year, Boxster S - £300 with Zero NCB attached. This year £200 (Must have renewed just before it started going crazy)

Last year, Scirocco 2.0 TSI - £200 with over 10 years NCB. This year, £300 (renewed last month).

So on average I'm the same, but I'm dreading to see what the Boxster would be next year as I think I timed it perfectly this year.

I saw a Martin Lewis thing the other day, his data indicates that the cheapest renewal quotes are best obtained 3-4 weeks before commencement date. It’s been my experience too, though this year I’ve had to adjust my long held principle of refusing to pay more than the previous year!

Car went up, £110 to £160

Bike went down, £160 to £103

Add to the fact bike gets free parking just about everywhere it's def getting far cheaper to run than my little Seat Mii daily

I think I went up from £360 to £540 on the Passat. Quite agreeable compared to some figures on here.

Based on your username this probably makes you a powerfully built company director. biggrin

Wasn't too bad to stay put on the VXR8 with Admiral but did go up.

Last year was £480 fully comp, 2 drivers, 5 years NCB, SW London. This year was £600.

The cheapest I found on comparisons was about £800 with most choices around the £1200 mark.

I have a Trade car policy and recently they allowed me to add all my motorcycles to it

5 bikes (at the time) fully comp - £40 additional premium

I only pay £1,500 for £300k of cover for all cars and bikes including classics, imports and modified - personally I think it's cheap

Percentage increases of that quantum will obviously look far worse when your existing Insurance premium is so ,relatively speaking, "cheap" but even £325 given the car and the area doesn't sound that expensive tbh.

I've noticed that in all the comparison site quotes for family members, Admiral Group (Admiral, Bell, Diamond, Elephant etc) seem to be nearly the cheapest. I still wouldn't use them - beware their claims procedures and the Standard Parts Replacement Clause.

Mine was quoted as a 25% increase.
Changed to another provider for the same price and got basic AA cover included and £20 Shell voucher.
No need to renew with RAC which was cover to be over a 100 pounds.

Similar age here and Direct Line renewal was the cheapest for me by a margin - even over a fresh quote on their own site. I followed the MSE guidance to try a month in advance and still nothing lower.

£220 last year, £280 this year. Cheapest comparison quote £370. An increase either way unfortunately.

Not sure what their target market or niche is!

Probably not a M2 owner!

Their target market is probably 55 year old Margaret from accounts who has her home and cat insured through them, driving no more than 4k pa. biggrin

That’s a huge win and just goes to show how cheap classics are.

Me - Abarth 595 £248 which I’m more than happy with.

sad to say bmw 1,2 and 3 series have performed terrible over the last couple of years and many insurers are either declining or putting their rates up, i saw a report where the 320 disiesel was the worst for claim stats

But for a M2 at £600 sounds very cheap.
