What cars will average 60mpg+ in normal day to day driving than can be bought for around £5,000? For 65 mile commute of mixed A-roads and motorways. Comfort, bit of space and few toys are key.

My 2004 Passat TDI will average 55mpg+ with extreame caution but want something that will do 60mpg day in day out whilst keeping up with the traffic - if such a car exists.....

Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 DI-D will average 60mpg average!

Get a manual with 94bhp and they are very good fun, with lots of grip!

My 2p's worth......if you drive them hard you will get 48mpg.

Lots of stuff on paper, very few in reality!

BUt the c2 diesel, feista diesel fiat 500's will on paper get 65+, in reality they should get 55.

For 5k I'd say a fiesta diesel will be best bet.

Most of the bluemotion VWs seem to do 60+ mpg and I think the BMW 320Ed will as well if you're very careful.

Is it worth the hassle of changing your car for a saving of 65p on the commute? If you know your car is reliable that is, if it needs replaced, fair enough, but saving 5mpg seems like a bit of a strange reason to change car.
Won't be saving 65p. 65 miles a day, at 45mpg in normal driving on the roads I do in this cold weather. I have to be trying pretty high to get mid 50s. Want something that without trying will do 60mpg.

I actually drive a LPG BMW, the Passat is my most economical car at my disposal as means of example.

If it's new, it aint going to be available for 5 grand. smile

I know someone who had a 1.5 diesel Meganne for a while and he used to average mid 60s from it. It didn't have much else to recommend it, though.

Would suggest a Clio DCi but I doubt it would fulfil the need for toys. They are very cheap to buy and run!

this. You're only gona save about £160 or so in one year. Which is largely outweighed by spending £5000 on another car whos service history/quality you are unaware of. how's ur passat on reliability? if its fine, just keep it.

I know nothing about that car, but I'm going to guess that it won't.

Years ago, i had a Orion 1.8D that would easily do more than 60mpg....By far the cheapest car i've ever ran.

Why not? 80-85 is what most people do.

In a similar vein, I'd imagine the old non-turbo ZX's/Saxos/Metros would be surprisingly economical (but dog rough hehe)

FWIW my dad's 05 Fabia estate always does well on this topic. It gets about 50 mpg town driving, and 65-75 on a run. 1.9 tdi, possibly the same engine as in the Passat? But with far less weight to lug around so not very stressed smile. Got all the kit bar sat nav and generally feels like a far bigger/more expensive car than it is. I would strongly recommend smile

I never understand why people do this whole 'on private roads' thing or substitute miles per hour for leptons when talking about being slightly naughty on a road. They must constantly look over their shoulders incase the 'net police are onto them for admitting to speeding on an Internet forum. Pangs of paranoia to me.

Anyway, Clio dci. I had one when I was younger and poorer and sold it to my sister. Easy 60 mpg and old enough (a very early common rail) to not have a stty dpf to go wrong. I know it doesn't suit you needs directly but the engine was used in loads of Renault and Nissan stuff so worth a look. Obvious reliability issues on the laguna and megane aside that is.

If that's the 1.5, it's bloody horrible. It will do a lot to the gallon in a little car though.
My dad has a micra and gets about 80 ish, I can get over 60.
