Looks like my MR2-Turbo is going to need a set of tyres sooner rather than later...

I kind of whittled it down to these two, just wondering if anyone had experience in comparing the two?

I have had the Toyo Proces T1-S before, and really like them, but I can't seem to find them anywhere?

REAR: 225/45/R16
FRONT: 205/50/R16

They were replaced by the T1-R about 10 years ago. The T1-R is being replaced with something equally Fast'n'Furious. Proxes 4 I think.

I'd go for the Falken, it's a much more modern tyre than the Toyo.

I don't know about the Falken but I've got some T1-R's superb grip even in the wet. I would recommend them.

I have Toyo tyres on my Griff and they are excellent once worn in a bit (500 miles). I am putting Falken FK 452 tyres on my MB S series (with AMG wheels), to replace run flat Dunlop tyres. Everyone I have spoken to has recommended the Falken FK 452. Good luck!

I don't. I don't like how the damp grip starts to drop off around half life. Good for the money though.

Both tyres are brilliant or st, depending on who you ask.

Agree with this. They have a reputation for the sidewalls being a bit 'floppy' but I haven't found that a major issue. I am going to try Toyo R-1Rs for the spring though. I think they have the compound of the 888s but have a water-displacing tread pattern like the T-1R.

I think the Toyo's will wear a lot quicker.

I was also told that 452's were discontinued and replaced by ZX912's.

I've ran 452s (235/40/18s) on my Monaro for 2.5 years now with no problems at all, wet or dry.

I actually have both on my car at the moment, had Toyo's ( Big mistake) but replacing with Falkens, far superior tyre in every respect, and cheaper which is a result.

I've had T1-R's fitted to a Clio 197 and they were really good. Am looking now for some tyres for my Civic and am probably going for them again.

No, the 912 is a different, softer more 'touring' style of tyre and hasn't replaced the 452.

OP - the general gist is T1-R best on lighter cars, 452 best on heavier cars. I had some 452 on my 6 MPS and they were OK but took forever to warm up so didn't really like short drives or the winter.

I've got 452s on the Alfa and they're not as good as the Eagle GSD3s that were on before it in the wet. Pretty much the same in the dry though.

General comments about the toyos are that the tyre wall is a bit soft, hence better on lighter cars.

Yes, I got that impression too. Used to run T1-Rs on the MX-5, thought they were good. The 350Z came with a pair of 452s on the front, but it's probably unfair to make any unfavourable comparisons between those well worn examples and the brand new OEM Bridgestones that replaced them.

I've used both and prefer the Falkens. Quieter, felt more secure in the wet, cheaper (although the wear rate was higher that the Toyo's, so probably about equal).
Toyo has a sexier tread pattern if you are into that sort of thing.

Will keep an eye on this thread since I'll be faced with the same options when I replace my current rubber.

OP, do keep us updated regarding your choice of tyre and your thoughts once you're running it.

With your car I'd be buying the best rear tyres you can afford, defintiely not T1's which are just a budget tyre with soft sidewalls. I've used both and the Fk452's felt much better to me but I would suggest Goodyear F1, Conti sport, Bridgestone Re050 or maybe even Hankook RS2 if has to be a budget tyre.

The question comes up a lot T1 v's Fk-452 and gets surprisingly mixed reactions;
See some of the threads below for other views.
I've tried both tyres on a number of cars and dont rate the T1 other than the fact its great value.

The T1's are low cost but having tried them on FWD/RWD and 4Wd turbo (on road and on track) I dont like them due to the soft squirmy feel given by the very soft sidewalls and notable poor grip in cold damp/wet use, and they are no use in the snow even on low pressure. But, it has to be said they are amazingly good value eg if you buy from Camskill, ideal for a runaround with good comfort/ride I just woudnt put them on a quick car again.

I've had the Falken 452 on an M5 (315 bhp and very heavy) and a Spec C Impreza (320 bhp) and a civic Type R and the tyres were really good for grip in both wet and dry, good feel of what's going on, sharp turn in with quite stiff sidewalls.

I wouldn’t put T1's on the rear of an MR2 due to the fact the sidewalls are soft hence with an MR2 turbo it will exaggerate that initial feeling of roll on turn in - due to the squirm from the rear tyres soft sidewalls. Having owned/raced MR2's I would say that is one of the characteristics of an MR2 that you dont want to make any more prominent. When we switched from road tyres to T888's in the Mr2 race series the handling was so much improved on the Mk2, and the stiff sidewall of the T888 was part of the reason you had much better feel of what was happening at the rear, especially in the wet.


I would go for something with a stiffer sidewall like a /Bridgestone Re050/ or Goodyear Eagle F1 (amazing grip in the rain on our Impreza Type 25 with 370 bhp) or a Conti Sport (evo tyre test winner) or for a cheaper alternative but good grip and with very very stiff sidewalls is the Hankook RS2 (also very low priced from Camskill) I replaced a set of Yoko A048 with Rs2's on an Integra and the turn in was almost as good which is amazing considerig the Ao48 is a road legal track tyre.

My recent use of Toyo T1's was

Integra type r

(4 new T1's fitted Oct but it ruined the handling made it feel soft and floaty, putting the Psi up to compensate this resulted in no grip in cold/wet, they seemed to have most grip down around 25 psi in the cold, which made the handling even more jelly like. In snow they were abysimal even the gentlest of inputs under 10 mph and it would follow lose grip eg slide off the crown of the road,). Since replaced the T1's by some second hand all season cheap tyres which have transformed the grip in cold/damp, no more wheel spin in 2nd gear due to T1's.

Impreza RB5 (took 2 worn Toyo T1's off the rear, they gave it a horrible soft lean on turn in replaced with Bridgestones it improved the feel of the car.

Saxo vts - it had 4 new T1's fitted Aug 10, by putting the pressures over 32 it was less soft/floaty, but that translasted into not much wet grip, but overall it was ok, certainly one of the cheapest tyre you can get in that 15" size.

205 1.9 Gti track car 15" - did one wet day at goodwood with T1's and it was a joke in the wet no grip compared to the worn out old Conti's that they replaced.

They are cheap for a reason but if you just drive normally and are not bothered about how the car feels or how much grip you need in the cold (wet/cold) they are fine for a budget tyre.


Some previous threads below, its interesting that people have varying opinions many of which could be down to how much experience most people have of driving and comparing different cars/tyres etc.

Both the toyo's and falkens are superb. Can't go wrong with either to be honest.

Just put 4 x Toyo's on the MX5. Not really had a good drive yet, but initial feelings are good. I'm lead to believe that they suit lightweight cars more than heavyweights (1500kg+).

Exactly my feelings after using them on a MK4 Golf GTI
