thinking of a cerbie, never been in one before, aware of large running costs but may just get one for the summer due to low cost of buying one

an itch i need to scratch!!

just how fast is a 4.2 or 4.5 cerbie in a straight line? can you try and put it into perspective -eg times, comparable cars etc.

cheers

put into perspective means to me "in your opinion please can you tell me how fast it is compared to other cars"

for example I could say a saxo vts has the same 0-60 as a, ooh, i dunno, BMW 330d off the top of my head. But, real world, i'd say a BMW is much much quicker due to the midrange.

or, a westfield megabusa is much quicker than you'd imagine due to being low to the ground etc and having the wind in your face.

cheers

Compared to a modern car or a mid 90's car when they came out?

Very quick!! Although I've heard said that productions maybe didn't always perform quite as well as press and TV demonstrators.

I don't think his Punto 1.2 or his Corsa 1.0 are gonna give you much perspective from his point of viewhehehehe
My little cars could easily overtake the TVR if it was doing 50 and I was doing 70 laugh

I had that on VHS.

I love the Cerbera, but surely that's a case of a well massaged press car? Are normal people ones really that fast?

Best bet is to try and find a nice friendly local who'll take you out in one and show you what to look for when buying one.

To try and put it into perspective, on my daily commute my Cerb is (was) faster than 95% of the cars I'd see, both in acceleration, mid, top end. Not bad on the handling stakes too (which is what I'm more interested in). It never fails to amuse me (on a private track), that you can be cruising at near 100mph and then you can start accelerating again, where as a lot of cars would be struggling.

Where abouts are you?

I would say 99% tbh.

I would probably agree, but I was being conservative to avoid an argument with the 'my car is faster than your car' brigade!

PS Buckshot has already won that with his Punto wink

When autocar tested the press 4.2 on a rolling road it gave within 1bhp of what TVR claimed for it IIRC, so yep it would seem a customer spec car really did spank the rest ..

My friend's 4.2 was absolutely no-where near as fast as the car in that video.
At VMax INXS the laser recorded 160 for the 4.2 vs 165 for Snuffy's Esprit 350's 165mph & Flying Trotter's 997C2S's 163mph. Note Mr Freefalls speedo not the laser registered 181mph in his 4.5LW. To compare across events use Dazren's 996X50 as a control car as its the only car that has attended every event as standard, in this case it recorded 179mph but be aware the weather makes a massive difference, hence the control car.
I'd tend to agree, I've seen a Cerb or two up at the Pod on RWYB days. Quick, but not trapping speeds anywhere near what some vids/mags would have you believe.
