Hi Guys

I have noticed a few comments about LPG being for pikeys, and some posters saying they wouldn't buy a car that had been converted.

When looking for a Range Rover Classic, a lot of cars had been converted to LPG, but none of them grabbed me as being particularly pikey - it seems a popular mod for the RRCs.

I personally wouldn't buy an LPG converted car, but just because I prefer originality.

Is it only certain LPG fuelled cars that are perceived as being pikey, or all of them?

I'm just curious as I never really thought of them in that way before.

Cheers

I guess its seen as for pikeys as they assume the owner cant afford to run it on petrol

So your a pikey for buying a cheaper car because you can't afford an expensive car too?

Your a pikey for servicing at an independent rather than main dealer because its cheaper?

what a load of rubbish.

Theres nothing wrong with running a car on LPG, if it saves you money especially in these harder times then who cares.

Completely agree. There doesn't seem to be an understanding of the concept of choosing to spend less money on something. If you don't do it the most expensive way then it's clearly because you can't afford it.

Utter nonsense & more fool them.
That said, as kits can be bought & fitted by anyone, there are some horrors out there so as always caveat emptor when buying one that's been converted.
Properly done & with the right kit for the car they reduce the fuel cost of running big engined cars considerably - and no-one wants big engined petrol cars so you can pick them up for low money.

Considering the outlay to convert the car originally, its hardly a cheap way of doing things unless you are going to run the car for a long time. How that relates to being pikey i do not know.

Was there not rumours of the tax relief on LPG being removed/reduced at some point soon? And therefore making it less of a financial benefit than before?

That's insanity. I figure that if it wasn't for the fact that a lot of old gas guzzlers had been converted to LPG that a huge percentage of them would have been scrapped by now. If you drive 12k miles a year you could easily spend £3,500 worth of fuel in one, and there's not many RRCs that are worth that much last I checked, friend of mine picked a nice one up for £1,200 not too long ago and it was on LPG and he runs it on LPG.

Total snobbery. I'd love an LPG converted LS400. In fact some of the Ovlov factory cars are catching my eye at the moment as I try to get away from my diesel puddle jumper...

It keeps the prices low(ish) an the queues at the pump non-existent. Who cares what they think?

I think it's mainly because there are/were a lot of shoddy/cheap conversions which aren't as effective as a decent quality system and looked far too homemade and dodgy. I'd definitely stay away from some of the home jobs.

It's also a great way if increasing the range of a car. I fking hate petrol stations so if I can fill up with twice as much fuel in one go then I'm all for it. Used to love filling the RangeRover when towing the track car. "Yes, pump 4, and 6, and 12 please".

I've just bought an LPG Omega. Best of both worlds as far as I can tell; cheap and basically the same as running on petrol from behind the wheel. I might have my 928 converted.

Nothing wrong with LPG at all. Why wouldn't you want to make your car cheaper to run?

Do the LPG-knockers cruise in 4th, for extra response? After all, 6th gear is for poverty-stricken hyper-milers...

LPG makes sense again it is a tool like choosing the diesel that allows you to run the car you want on a lower budget.

Never heard of this saying before but I would have thought that red diesel is the fuel of choice.
