VOLVO S60 T5 or D5 FOR 6k?
Discussion
Hi guys,
I'm in the process of looking for a new car. I have narrowed my choice down to a Volvo S60 but im unsure which model to buy for the best. I have found a few possible cadidates but two that i am very interested in and can possibly view them both tomorrow as they are both local ish.
A T5 SE Here 45k on a '55 plate

And a D5 Sport here 50k on a '54 plate

I will obviously get a better idea after seeing them both in the flesh but id like to know which one would be the better engine to buy. I have a new job and will only be covering approx 4000 miles per year. Thats why i considered the T5 but as i can get a similar spec D5 i cant ignore it as after eading a couple of reviews it seems to be a great engine and package. I cant see the interior on the D5 but im guessing its not as nice as the T5 with the alu trim and sphere gear knob etc, plus is cream leather trim and i'd prefer the black but these details i can ignore for the right car.
So what do you guys think, plus ive read they are pretty reliable but is the D5 more relaible or vice versa?
Thanks in advance
Jon.

To repeat a post I made on a previous S60 thread:
"20 yrs old, S60T5, above 100k, no problems at all...
Things to look for. Make sure the idle on the S60 is rock steady (last thing you want is an ETM issue), any knocking noises coming from the suspension at low speed are not a major issue and no reason to put you off; but anything more major than that be weary. Check the service history for any work, mine had had the bouncing central locking and the ETM addressed, as well as a recent cambelt change not so long ago so I managed to pick up a good one.
Worn clutches on high milers if it has been driven by a tit (worth taking it up some hills and giving it some throttle on the hill to check for slip) as a clutch change is at least 500 quid (have to drop the engine out).
As for the S60 T5. Don't compare it in the corners to a Beemer, it's not going to compete with a 3 series but anybody who tells you the handling is bad is lying or has never driven one. The steering is numb but is by no means bad and if you go booting the throttle mid corner what do you think is going to happen when 250bhp and 1600kgs are going through the fronts?
Also, best sound system for less than £100k."
It depends what you consider important. If performance is your thing don't try the T5, because the D5 (even contrary to what they will say a "mapped" one) will never go as well as the T5... Not a bad car by any means though. If you don't like being robbed at the pumps on a weekly basis, go with the D5.
Good choice BTW

i have owned both. however you are looking at the wrong D5 . The D5 you have chosen is the one with 163bhp.. You want to be looking at the 185bhp Euro Version, with 295lbt. The D5 Euro spec with 185bhp, is a nippy car, as its got 295lbt of torquer it doesnt feel much slower than the T5 when driving.
The D5 185bhp model give me 45mpg, whereas the T5 i had averaged 25mpg. The insurance on the T5 was also 500quid more expensive per year. I have my D5 185bhp version on 18 inch wheels, all the toys, and its never broken down on me, its now got 201,000 miles! my Old T5 had 101k miles when i got rid of it and it broke down twice. I would strongly recommend you view a D5 euro 185mph model variety as IMO its the best engine Volvo has made
mine has the brushed alloy interior, both had leather seats and were/are black, i have 18 inch wheels on the d5 which make the turning circle ludicrously massive. the t5 i remember had lots of trouble getting the power down, also it ate front tyres very quickly. the d5 185bhp i have does 0/60 in just under 8 seconds and thats without remap, the t5 did it 6.5 seconds but as mentioned before only did 25mpg, when i put my foot down i could see the active mpg computer show it doing 12mpg

What made the T5 break down mate? How much would i be looking at for a facelift 185bhp D5 though? The D5 185bhp model give me 45mpg, whereas the T5 i had averaged 25mpg. my car if i was to sell it would probably go for under 4grand?? the car has been fine, have had alternator go, and shock absorbers went last week, but hey its got 201k miles on it and still going strong (auto|)(original turbo/gearbox/engine/)
the t5 i had , it had issues with the coolant, the hoses split and got stranded , then theere was an issue with the gearbox(it was an auto)...so i got rid of it at just over 100,000 miles. i would say the d5 is by far more reliable and overall cheaper, the t5 is fast in a straight line but not that much faster than the d5. if you got the d5 remapped for 300 quid you wouldnt notice the difference in power much at all, and save loads everytime you fill the car up. the stereos in s60's are amazing dolby pro logic, the seats are very comfy front and back, the ride is smooth and stable at high speed, the xenon lights are really clear at night, i have these 4 C dampers on the D5 which make the ride better, i only have them on Sport as on C for comfy it makes the car float which i dont like
also i have this smart nav, where you press a button on the dashboard and it phones a call centre, and then u tell the person where you want to go, then the directions get sent to you automatically, and does gps , so that you are not looking at a pixelated screen in the car like other sat navs. i dont know if its a volvo satnav as i havent seen it in other cars but i would recommend that bit of kit.. i will post some links to facelifted D5 185bhp models

Given your mileage - T5.
Given each cars specifications - T5.
Given credibility - T5.
I would double check the 260bhp for the T5.
On a sidenote, the 185bhp D5 EuIV drinks fuel more rapidly (cf 43mpg with 53mpg)than the 163bhp D5 EuIII (your link is a 163bhp car). However, given your mileage, this is pretty irrelevant PLUS you will buy the T5

jon that one you have flagged up is very similar to my one, albeit 150,000 less miles!" i have used mine all over the country, its used by other family members as a dependable car as it never breaks down .
if i go 85mph i get 45mpg! everyone that has got into the car as passengers have been amazed by how fast it goes, apart when you initially start it first thing, it doesnt sound clattery like most diesels do. just make sure that when u floor it, big clouds of smoke dont come out of the exhaust.
