So I left my SL500 SORNed for a month to even out the spread of car related bills throughout the year. In the meantime the MOT ran out, so last week I booked it in for an MOT and took it along. It passed ok and I taxed the car online the same evening.

Yesterday I get a snotty letter saying I had been driving an untaxed car! So in the 7miles between home and the garage, there was a camera checking car registration numbers. What a horrendous Orwellian society we live in now makes me so angry.

I thought you are allowed to drive an untaxed vehicle to an MOT centre.

As far as i know there is an exemption for driving to an MOT garage.....it may be worth questioning it?

Well on the one hand it is good that illegals will get caught by these cameras.

On the other hand you are legally allowed to drive to a pre-booked MOT without tax/test smile

How far apart should these cameras be? 8 miles? Anywhere as long as they aren't between your house and an MOT station?

+1.

As long as the Test was pre-booked. AS mentioned.

If it was, the testing station will have a record of it. If it wasn't then, I'm afraid, you're f***ed

You are - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicl...

The ANPR cameras don't know that you were on your way to/from a test though.

Indeed, if you can prove it. So the OP just has to send a copy of his MOT along with a cover letter explaining what happened and it should be ok. I say should.....

So, basically he has to prove his innocence...

yes and quite rightly so, if he is innocent as it would seem he has nothing to worry about. ANPR cameras are one of the better uses of police time IMO.

The car wasn't taxed. So, on the way to an MoT test centre; no tax is no tax and an offence?

AS with most laws in this country there are 'reasonable exceptions'

Pre booked MOTs is one for not having tax or MOT.

I agree with the post that said ANPRs are one of the better uses of Police time, keeps more uninsured, unlicensed and general scumbags off the road for those of us that DO abide by the laws (well, some laws)

Even the Government aren't stupid enough to not realize you can't get tax without MOT test.
