Ah crap a What Car - Small Hatches for Mother Dear
Discussion
OK so being the family "car person" I have been roped into helping my dear mother replace her 206 CC which has had the roof down... err... once in 6 years.
Basically she wants a small, cheap, reliable hatch that she can pootle about in without worrying about it. Less than three years old and low miles is also a bonus which most cars of that age appear to be anyway since they are not really motorway wafters.
Initial discussions have her partial to a Fiat 500 but I am going to also have her at least look at a few other things around that size such as a Honda Jazz, Suzuki Swift, Aygo/107/C1, Fiat Panda (same as a 500 but not "funky" but half the price).
Are there any I have missed and what are people experiences with cars of this type? The 206 despite not being serviced and only used for short trips is still going strong and I do not want to lumber her with something that will need lots of dealer attention.
Anyone want a 53 plate moonstone blue 206cc with no service history and flat paint?![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)

Honda Jazz is the obvious choice and for very good reasons - reliable and competent without being inspiring.
My mother went for an A class Merc (tied in with my dad's CLK) and apart from one or two minor snags, it's been very good in the 3 years she's had it. Gets over 50mpg out if it too (think it's a 1.8 diesel or similar) although she regards speed limits as being exactly that and never drives over 70 and rarely uses the kick down.

My mum wanted a small hatch back as a run around along side her Discovery.
After discussing the options with her (many times) she settled on a 1.5 swift (would have been a sport but the lanes are terrible where she lives), she loves the little thing. I borrowed it a while ago when I was between cars and it is a surprisingly fun little car to drive.
We've been so pleased with it we bought a second one for my sister's first car.

My parents have one as a run about - its a good car and never goes wrong, it doesn't drive too bad either. My father also claims in excess of 50mpg out of a 1.4 petrol which can't be bad...Nice main dealer car with warranty and low miles.

My folks have a 1.4 Mazda 2 (the Ford Fusion version, not the current Fiesta version). Reliable, reasonably quick (you can overtake without thinking you're going to die), Mum can get her flower arrangements in the back, Dad can get his tractor and lawnmower bits in it, and it has spec coming out it's ears (4 electric windows, aircon, MiniDisc head unit (!), the whole heap.
