definately raised the bar again..lot of other manufacturers should take a leaf out of the 'evolution not revolution' ethos Porsche apply to the 911...won't mention the ugly duckling of the breed Panamera..at this juncture....

Are you sure ? Panels and chassis ? That would be the biggest news. Do you have a source for that info please ?

According to an Auto Express article, quote ;

The big changes for the 991 start with an all-new platform made from a mix of aluminium and steel for the ideal mix of strength and lightweight construction.

Not only will it mean the 991 is lighter than the 997, but this new platform will form the modular basis for all-new Boxser and Cayman models, so it really is the foundation stone of Porsche’s sporting future.

They then go onto say ;

Significantly, the wheelbase is longer too, which means the rear wheels have been pushed closer to the engine, further reducing the effect of that famous rear-biased weight distribution.

So that’s probably why a couple have said it looks massively longer than the 997. However when you look at a photo of the new 991 taken at this angle ;

It suddenly looks shorter - what’s that all about confused

That's not the new car. It's a rendering knocked up before the new car was unmasked. A good guess, but shorter than the real thing.

The side profile would suggest that the engine is still in the correct place, but unfortunately the rear wheels no longer are. The proportions would be aided enormouosly if they were nudged circa 60 to 80mm forwards.

I really, really like that. Best evolution of the original yet IMHO.

But then I'm biased...

I agree here, its a shame to see the end of the more traditional 911 interior - the 997 dash was perfect in my eyes.
With you on this. The DNA of the 911 dash stretches from the 997 all the way back, and it's one of the real strengths of the car IMHO. Extending the controls significantly onto the centre console is a big departure, and far more Panamera-esque than I'm happy with.

Apart from that, it looks like a good evolution of the design.

I think it looks great. I think its lost just enough of the awkwardness that you get from earlier models, and its still recognisably a 911. Its gone from being 'A car' to being 'A pretty car'.

I neither like nor dislike this, it's a dull evolution which is what i'm sure they needed to do to draw in their target market which is fair enough. I'm actually rather liking the standard 996 now, whereas I didn't when it came out. 997 meh, this double meh.

You could do, but then I might have to point out that I was being sarcastic.

Based on those pics, I'm not keen. Would rather a 997.

May change my opinion after seeing one in the metal.

I don't like it. Very bland interior and outside. I like the back though, which is good because that is the only side I will be seeing in my cars atm!!!
People are defending the horrific lack of design progress on this car still being a 911, however, even though it may well still be a 911 it is still a new car. I will find this nigh on impossible to tell the difference between the previous model from the front and I am a certified anorak.
Come one, Porsche, grow some balls.

It doesn't look massively different but I'm not keen on the rear - the rear lights are too effeminate/Italian, the sort of thing Alfa would do. It doesn't look as juicy, if you know what I mean.

It will be great car though - good performance figures too for the 3.8, probably all the sports/GT car you'd ever need on the road.

I'd love it if the 911 were longer. That back slope doesn't do it for me, but it doesn't seem as steep on this model. Nice smile

no no I got the sarcasm part, but reading the same dribble on every thread kind of gets tiresome.

yep i know exactly what you mean. I just cannot find a single bit of the design to compliment. The back looks horrid (especially from side profile), it will be technically brilliant no doubt but how can porsche expect to compete against jaguar xk's and aston martins,

I think one of the reasons the used 996tt's hold their value well is that they actually look good, if I had any money I would buy a set of 993tt and 996tt's, 2.7RS's etc, I think they will increase vastly in value as the new stuff is just so dull,

the cayenne and panamera are already widely regarded as two of the ugliest models around - looks like the whole range is going in a similar direction!

All I can say is I'm hugely disappointed. The headlights are far too spherical in the side profile, it'll certainly bring many "looks like a beetle" comments with it. IMO a step back from the 996 and 997. Looks more modern, but certainly not any prettier.

It is nice to see a really decent leap in the design of the 911, more akin to the 993 to 996 jump. I don't like the fact that it now appears to have a very panamera front end. Hats off to porsche for doing something a bit different with the rear end all the same. Not mad keen on the way porsche sell their cars (all the gt3 RS Supersport Turbo Lightweight Super Special Editions) but at least they have the design right with this one, it is very fresh and even as someone who dislikes porsches, this gets an 8/10 from me.

I really like it, just looks right to me. Will have to see one in person to judge properly.

will be technically brilliant too im sure.
