It doesn't matter if you merge early or late, (I tend to merge sooner rather than later), if everyone left a bit of room between them and the car in front, (in all lanes!), then the perceived barging and resultant queues wouldn't happen.

The trouble with everyone merging at different times is that those already in L1 experience a constant stream of people trying to get in front of them over an 800 yards stretch. FWIW, I despise self appropriated queue/lane Nazis!
Which is probably why they get stty, as they may think that if they've let one car in they've 'done their bit'.

It's not closed yet. He's still free to use it. He's - maybe - choosing to do so because it's the most flowing lane of all of his options, so has no reason to move out of it yet and hinder his own progress. Or he also thinks that he should have merged, but is enjoying an opportunity to jump a queue.2b) Why is he in the lane, as he knew it was closing?

Is he? He could just be avoiding an obstructed lane for as long as possible, because he can. He's not stopping all those who pulled over early from doing the same thing, they chose instead to join the congestion as soon as they could. Not BMW man's fault. Saying that, though, some of them are being bullies though. I've come across a fair few drivers who don't even give others a chance to be courteous, but simply shove in an make their own space in all sorts of scenarios, then tailgate the person in front just in case another like-minded individual tries to get one over on them. How is he bullying you unless he's actually attempting to force you off the road or swerving in front of you? Would he even need to do this if he wasn't being squeezed out by tailgaters? Isn't it true that perhaps the tailgaters refusing to let him in doing the bullying? Isn't it possible to be polite, or a bully, on both sides of this debate?StottyZr said:

My opinion is that you should just open the door. Can I honestly say I've never in 20 years tried to deny someone room to get in front of me when I thought they were trying to bully past me? Unfortunately not. Noone likes feeling like they've been taken advantage of. It's hard to tolerate both points of view all the time, and it can be hard sometimes just to let these things go even when, in the grand scheme, they are of no consequince to you if you don't act, and nothing positive will be achieved if you do.Although, If I am actually incorrect and I should just "open the door" then I apologise and I will do so in the future

I cannot begin to understand the limited intellectual capacity of the people who think a two lane dual carriageway queue should not be two lanes of queuing traffic but a single lane twice as long with a completely empty lane alongside.
So I drive down the empty lane in my BMW, watching the dim people carefully lest they lunge out in front of me, and then I merge when the lane I am driving begins to close, or when I see a gantry sign indicating the lane is closed.
Quite how anyone can argue this is anything other than correct, especially when its even in the highway code, I've no idea.

Technically they have really, (the whole point of 'merge in turn') but there's no way to Police it I guess. I've reached the point where I don't let it get my back up and I'll let lone cars into the space I've left, but when a stream of them assume they've got access and try to squeeze in, they're taking the piss and I won't be quite so accomodating.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
