A little unusual I realise, but Chris is doing the video reviews for a US based Youtube only channel called "Drive." He writes exclusively for PistonHeads, so you'll always get a little bit of back story to the video here when it goes up on a Wednesday evening, and any accompanying longer reviews will appear exclusively here.

I'm a day-one follower of "Drive", they have some quality stuff out there. I especially like some of the "TUNED" stuff with Matt Farah.

It has over 300BHP! Come on now...
But I really, really want one. I was considering a Cayman R as my next car but now I need one of these.
You are getting paid too much! I remember when you were looking for a grad job. Goodness, I thought I worked in a lucrative industry...must try harder. But I really, really want one. I was considering a Cayman R as my next car but now I need one of these.

Since I am apparently the PH stereotype made flesh (being a company director, possessing a goatee and being powerfully-built - well, heavy, anyway) I don't find my masculinity threatened by the car I drive, so I'd buy a Boxster if everything Monkey said was true. But it ain't. This car is not £40k. It's £46k with no options, and with any sensible set of kit it's knocking on £60k -
I still can't figure out what sort of kit one 'should' want on a 2-seater ragtop sports car in order to be considered 'sensible'- auto 'box (blech)? Sat nav? (get lost - or at least I thought that was the point of such a car, if I want to go from A-B with minimum fuss I'll buy a Polo Bluemotion)? Bigger wheels/tyres (if I wanted to ocmpromise the dynamics on UK roads for the sake of 'imagine' I'd get an A5 S-line and be done with it)? Colour/trim (simple tends to be best)? It's not a luxury barge FFS... I'll wager to bet that the boggo £46K version includes quite a few items I'd have deleted if given the choice; as with all but the very basic new cars nowadays...Resale? Um, I just specced a new company car; everything I put on top of the basic spec (including the 'indispensable' metallic paint) is being reflected in the monthly rate to almost exactly the tune of the option price divided by the number of months the contract lasts. That'll be just the options I want, then, and no more.

I'm a porsche fan but I've never been a fan of the styling. This, however, I like very, very much! The original boxter was never a real looker but it still sold like hot cakes. This, looking like that, will sell a whole lot beter even. I think this will steal a lot of sales from the Cayman/911.

Going to the 'official' launch at my local dealer in a couple of weeks so I'll get a close up view of it. I'll be sure to slag the salesman off about that damned electronic handbrake for starers, and also make sure I quaff as much free vino as I can.
Yes great review Chris and the bit about it being a 'complete' sports car is spot on. My wife drives our current 3.4S and is happy as larry pottering around with the wind in hair, but I always look forward to driving it - and I can't remember ever thinking I need more power. It's already a top package but this one looks even better, plus the interior looks light years ahead.
As for manly? Couldn't honestly give a monkeys - all I know is it's a great steer and well over 20K cheaper than a 911.

It's interesting reading all the comments on the new boxster... feminine... masculine... bla bla bla. Over the past 7 years i've owned 2 boxsters, a Cayman S, 911 GT3 (996) 911 C4S (996 & 997) Lotus Exige Sprint, RS Focus MK2 and the mighty Nissan GTR. I've just ordered a 981 because of all the cars listed about that i've owned and driven the boxster is the best of them all in one car! (for what i want anyway) The GTR, GT3, Exige are awesome and after driving bikes for years they are the only cars that almost cut that buzz! On the road tho i just found myself driving them far too quick... and i value my licence and my 2 boys far too much these days! A Cayman is a boxster with a metal roof simple as that... great car but it's just down to if you fancy a soft top or not ! 911 C4S are fantastic as well there's nothing more to say than that ! So here's man with 2 boys and my other motor is a nissan navara doublecab (badass truck) ordering a new boxster... simply because in Scotland we get too much sun not to have a convertible plus it's magic having the roof down while wearing my kilt!!!!

Resale? Um, I just specced a new company car; everything I put on top of the basic spec (including the 'indispensable' metallic paint) is being reflected in the monthly rate to almost exactly the tune of the option price divided by the number of months the contract lasts. I didn't save the spec, but I guess the key options break into two lists:Resale? Sportiness: PASM, PTV, 20s, Sport Chrono (I left this out as I *hate* the stupid clock, and it's largely meaningless in the NA cars with a manual gearbox), Sportauspuff, Litronic (or never drive fast at night), sports seats
Convenience and comfort: PCM (satnav), Bose, bluetooth phone prep, cruise control, leather, park distance, colour choice
You could conceivably ditch some or all of the latter, but then the car would be much less usable as an everyday vehicle. And if you can afford to spunk 55k on a weekend-only toy, then why not buy something much more extreme? Surely the point of the Boxster (and the 911) is that it can be your every-day car as well. For me, that was the whole point of the 997 - I went from a daily driver (BMW 535D) and a weekend car (F360 spider) to a single all-purpose vehicle (997TT cab). I could have specced a 997TT that cost less than 120k, too, but wouldn't have wanted to drive it for work as well as pleasure.
It has little to do with resale, in my view, as you rightly point out, although lack of PASM and PCM will hurt, I expect.
The scary thing is that if you add PDK and SportChrono to my spec, you're looking at 64k. That was base Carrera money not that long ago.
I have to say putting aside all the mr2 blah blah comments which I personally dont see.
I love this car, the old was a slightly on the femanine side and yes this matters to me but thats because its my taste it diddnt look agressive enough however the previous boxster with the aero kit look stunning and still does today from 2003-2005 model, quite hard to come by.
This new one I will say is gorgeous right out the box, especially the s and the bigger wheels. it seems to perform as well as it looks and I wont be able to afford a new one but my word I will be waiting for a couple of years to role on and pick up a decent low millage example in no time.
Cant wait.
