I saw 3 yesterday whilst up in Swindon yesterday. One black, one dark blue and one in what looked like lambo orange, either very similar to this or I guess it may even have been this exact car (can't remember the reg):

Looked quite cool and certainly caught my attention very easily. smile
you saw 3 in a day! i see about 3 per year!

that orange one looks hideous.

Maybe I'm more observant then, but they are among my favourite cars so I tend to notice them. I see a few different ones around Bristol on a semi regular basis, they're not common but there are still a fair few about.

Totally agree.! And that's why I think the 840's especially the Sport's and unmolested low mile cars will start to increase in value.! Hence the 30k one owner car that's just been sold for nearly £18k...........watch this space............!

You hardly see any 8 series on the roads, certainly not plumbers, drug dealers or chavs!

Almost a year on from when I originally posted up about this topic, I've finally found a car worth putting my money into. It's ace.

What a machine.

I had my eye on similar one as well.

Will be picking one of these up later in the year if the prices have not gone through the roof.

Enjoy crusing in what is one the coolest cars out there.

The XK8 looks like a giant 1996 Toyota Celica with a big fat arse. And they rust like a bd - seen plenty of these around with rotten sills and rear arches. Think Jaguar and I still think 'British Leyland' and 'Lucas'. They haven't aged at all well. The interior resembles a Japanese effort at 'British prestige'.

I had an 840Ci a good 10+ years ago. Reliability was okay once the problems were sorted - a typical main dealer maintained car where they'd changed the oil but done bugger all preventative maintenance. The brakes aren't that good - great for high speed slowing, but they feel dead.

Neither car will be cheap to run, and expect plenty of annoying niggles. The XK8 doesn't get a second glance but the 8 Series always looks rare and special.
I have to take issue with this post. I have had loads of people come up and compliment on our XK8 convertible.

Rust - none, and it is stored outside.
Interior - has held up well, people seem to like it
'Lucas' - no issues at all with electrics
'Leyland' - well one of the headlamps can mist up from time to time....er thats it...
Brakes - no issues as far as I can see. Not hit anything yet!

In nearly two years and 10,000 has cost us £500 at a jag specialist and some of that was elective rather than necessary.

I'm going to put in for a gearbox oil change (preventative, not required), service, MOT and have a wind deflector fitted. Certainly expecting change from a £1,000.

I can't fault it. That said I do like the 8 series but to my mind it does look more dated, not that that would be a problem for me. Personally I think the OP can't go wrong whichever he chooses!

Cheers, gents.

It will look even better once I score the OE wheels for it. That won't happen until Monday, though. I had to 'borrow' these from my B10 as the Style 32's that came with the car did it no justice whatsoever.

Someone described the 840 as a white elephant, so figured I'd show mine. It's even got a proper gearbox wink

It does look really really really good with the Alpinas though.

Perhaps worthwhile getting a set for it?

Alternatively Style 5 BBS cross spoke/split rims look rather lovely on the 8 series too.

Funnily enough, I ordered the 8 Series portfolio from Brooklands which arrived today.
It has various roadtests replicated and there are two articles that include the XJS and XK as joint tests with some great photos. In both, the 8 looks far more modern in direct comparison.

Very nice. A manual would be great but they're very thin on the ground. Plus, the car is a bit of a pudding so the auto is better suited from an overall perspective. That's what I keep telling myself wink

E31Shrew has a set of 18's on his 8er and they do look fantastic. I wan to return it to it's original spec so a set of M System II's are in the pipeline.
As much as I like all of those wheels, these really suit the lines of the sport kit which lifts the car as a whole and make is look much more purposeful which belies the fact it's a near 2 tonne fatty!

only when the rear passengers are the size of babies...

My dad had an 840 for a number of years, and although nice looking, good to drive (in a GT kind of way) and generally reliable (although I remember the car suffering from battery/electrical problems), the interior packaging wasn't good. The front seats took up far too much room resulting in next to no legroom for the rear passengers. My dad and I are both only ca. 1m80cm tall but when either one of us drove there was no chance for a rear passenger.
Did 4 up in the 8 a few years back to Germany, 4 adults. No complaints from anyone

I'd also consider M Paras too. They are rather sexy alloys.
