RE: PH Carpool: Vauxhall VX220
Discussion
Great cars - my first venture in to sports cars.
Ran for 30k and 3 years as a daily drive - never missed a beat.
When I think if the time, money and effort I have had to put in to running an S1 and now an S2 I wonder if I made a mistake selling it?
VX's have an annoying lack of cubby holes in the cabin though!

Thats because they're mid engined RWD no traction control and when it gets damp they need talent and careful throttle control.
Awesome cars!!
Had a Black 2.2 from new, loved it to bits, best driving position ever and a real joy to own.
Even took it for 3 weeks round Spain and Portugal, the small fuel tank did get to me after a while but not before the backside went numb!!
It's great no one really knows what it is and its been called a Lambo by a proud Spainish boy who had his picture taken with it
Enjoy it!!

Remember drilling the pre cat out of mine on your driveway! Are you still in the area?
Nice thread. Sure beats the 'sports cars' I had as a 20 year old.
£200 a year to insure a VX220? That's about what I paid to insure a teenage shed.
I wonder if GTRene's steering issue was a damaged rack? I've felt similar reluctance and a notchy action in the steering of something much more mainstream after brushing a kerb.

Sounds like a seized universal joint in the column to me, my mr2 had exactly the symptoms he describes.
My VX steering didn't weight up like that.
Have to say I forgot how rubbish and totally wrong for the car the stock 17" front wheels look. Drives so much better on 16" fronts as well. 1st thing mine got was TD light weight jobs and Exige alignment done over at Track club - huge difference for the good.

No it was not damaged, it was also just 6 months old and like new £200 a year to insure a VX220? That's about what I paid to insure a teenage shed.

on speed it felt "ok" but at lower speed a resistance from point zero to left or right in the Turbo.
I also did a test-drive in a 400hp Opel Speedster Turbo (VX220 turbo) which also had the same steer feeling as the car I had...all Turbo's (Opel at least) seems to have that, don't know about the Opel 2.2. speedsters though.
And yes at least the Opel (mainland) versions seems to have other steering racks and suspension etc the Lotus versions...
But without those 3 things I hated ;-) I do like the cars and they are 'cheap' to get for such a lot sporty feelings and special looks me thinks.
Perhaps the reluctance to steer from the straight ahead some slack engineered in case a driver sneezes?
When they don't have a PAS and CAR Magazine called the original Elise an instrument for driving, I'm surprised to learn of such steering issues.
I'd still like several long drives in one.

Love these cars.
I could never trust the 2.2 engine though. Had one on my driveway in some godawful Vectra, impeccable service history, new chain oil feed etc and it still went, smash the valves, cracked the head and damaged the pistons.
Still. I'm sure I was unlucky and such problems are over reported.. You could always buy a replacement engine for buttons I suppose.
I'd have one.

I'd put a pic of mine up that I just took, if it wasnt for it being parked on the side of the road awaiting the RAC
Injector or ECU fault.... just after I had been singing its praises and it flew through its MOT yesterday!
Still love the damn thing, just slightly frustrated at the minute

One thing that makes a supercharged vx220 2.2 more attractive than the turbo to me is the fact the engines are available for peanuts. If you push it too far and blow it it's not a stupidly large bill for a new lump.I could never trust the 2.2 engine though.
