Thats a mule for the next Twingo and Smart car, they'll share platforms and engines when they're out in a couple of years - http://www.worldcarfans.com/112022441608/next-gene...Hoygo said:
Renault is really abandoning UK and especially now the R.S brand for UK i think, but still i think that we deserved it,after giving first the Clio 172 cup not limited (in Europe it was called "Ragnotti" and was a limited edition),than the 182 Trophy only for UK in big numbers, and than not selling the R26.r here which all unsold cars were sent back, i think they understand UK is not anymore their biggest market.
In Germany and other European countries the Megane 250 sold much more than in UK which demonstrates clearly they don't care for UK anymore as Europe is their profit market,5 door hatchbacks are very common in Europe and 3 doors are ofter refused hence they're making the next Clio R.S 5 doors only, its clear they aim for Europe and not UK anymore.
IIRC, the Clio 172 Cup was originally an LE (GP52HLO where are you now!) It sold out so fast, that Renault 'unlimited' it and even introduced AC and metallic silver for later cars. I'd love to know if anyone acually ordered the factory rollcage that was available as an optional extra!

Bizarrely, the 182 Trophy was also available in Switzerland.
I was under the impression the R26R's did sell out - certainly trying to track one down at the time was an impossible task.
Ok, I think this Clio looks much better than the current one(one of the reasons long snout) despite being 4 door. This new Zoe design style by Renault is original and attractive. But there is no way this Clio will drive any where near as good as the curent 200. Two reasons for that:
1.Turbo-ed engine
(Although Germans in AutoZeitung today say it will retain the same engine as the current one-hopefully!)
2. In the phase one Clio 197 was not good enough to beat Mini, while in phase two Renaultsport took more liberties and created much better and adjustable handling car. So in phase 2 Renaultsport properly delivers while this new Clio (especially in the beginning) will live on the glory of its predecessor.

I love it the way people just write off cars without even driving them. The new Clio may be shocking, terrible, not a patch on it's predecessor, but you can't make a sweeping statement that "there is no way this Clio will drive anywhere near as good as the current 200". The fact is, you (and nobody for that matter) actually knows. 1.Turbo-ed engine

Also it does make me laugh because a car is turbo and not NA all of a sudden its "not as good". Modern turbos are nothing like the laggy versions of the past. Anyone that's driven my 1M who have no idea that it's turbo charged never believe me when I say what's under the bonnet.
Don't get me wrong I love a high revving NA (had a lot in my time) but there is a lot of performance to be had out of turbo cars. Plus they're easy to tune

Will everyone please stop trying to defend this future Clio. It will be cutesey and fat, with a small capacity turbo engine, toy flappy-paddles, and aimed squarely at the 500 and Mini town drivers, because we are a niche, and Renault want a piece from the bigger slice of the "performance" pie.
Needless to say, I come to these conclusions because I've only just ordered a 200 Cup.![wink](/inc/images/wink.gif)

Whilst I am concerned about the prospect of a 5 door, turbocharged car - I am optimistic that the guys at RS will be able to work their magic with this one. The shots from Pistonheads don't look like the car is sporting Brembo's which would be a surprise after the 197 / 200.
Looking forward to driving the new RS Clio so I can make my own mind up![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)
Indeed, RS have always done well at making driver experience the priority. I have faith!Looking forward to driving the new RS Clio so I can make my own mind up

Nurburgring video of it, not bad, but for sure it will not match the current one

As for the 5dr debate - why did Renault stop producing hot Meganes in 5dr format? Presumably because they were a sales flop...
In fairness, I prefer 5 to 3 door cars and as noted, there are some successful designs like the Fiesta and Panda. As far as Meganes are concerned, I think the demographic for hot hatches in the UK is different and anyone wanting a 5 door hot hatch would go Golf. I don'tknow if Ford still make a 5 door ST - they did with the ST170.Autocar showing pictures of the new base model Clio - so the sporty one should be pretty close:
