I remember working for an Alfa franchise, in the early 80s, and we were kept busy replacing bodypanels on these because of the demon rust, and the cars were less than a year old, Holes in the front edge of the bonnet and tops of the front wings, but did we have fun driving them on errands, garage exchanges etc. I was young and inexperienced in fast cars but these went like s**t off a shovel.
Must be super rare to have an original one now!!
My best mate's Dad had a brand new red Giulietta in about 1983/84 which my friends and I were very jealous of. My parents had a Talbot Horizon by comparison. We were less jealous a year or two later when the Alfa had holes in it you could put your fist through and even less jealous when it was scrapped a handful of years after that. Imagine scrapping a five or six year old car in 2012 because you could literally see through it.Must be super rare to have an original one now!!
I started driving in 93 and over the years (although mostly in the 90's)i had a few 80's and early 90's cars, and i still have a passion for them - My most recent being a BMW E30 Motorsport Edition Convertible in Macau Blue (one of the origional batch of 40 built)
I have also had:
Mk1 Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia (First Car)
Mk2 Ford Orion 1.6i Ghia with full factory RS Bodykit
S1 Escort RS Turbo
S2 Escort RS Turbo (very modified)
Rover SD1 Vittesse
Manta GT/E Coupe
Mk2 Golf GTI 8valve (TSR 2.1 Litre)
Phase 1 Renault 19 16-Valve (Redbourne engine conversion)
Mk4 Escort XR3i SE500 Cabriolet
E30 BMW 325i Sport (Tech 1)
Mk2 Fiesta XR2
Porsche 944 Turbo
W124 Mercedes 300e
2x SAAB 9000 Carlsson CDE's
W124 Mercedes 300-24 (Full 'Carat by Duchatelet' converion)
Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo (ex Tokyo Auto-salon show car)
E30 BMW 325i Motorsport Edition convertible.
Currently drivivng a 2003 SAAB 9-5 Aero HOT (which will never be a retro car) and a 2nd generation RenaultSport Clio 172 (which i a sure will be a future retro car)
I do have an urge though (if i can find some space) for something 80's for use if/when i have some free time to tinker and play, and for some reason its an MG Meastro Turbo that has me thinking Hmmmmmm? But i cant remember the last ime i saw one, never mind saw one for sale.

A Ford Capri 3.0S in Stratos Silver for me, 1980 just squeeks you into the last of them.
Specifically this one would be good!

One of Bodie's.

Mk2 Chavalier was a bloody good car in its time, I racked up over 250k in 3 company wagons with little in the way of faults.
My Dad thought the Mk2 1.6 GL (Velour seats, oooooh) was good at the time. The Mk3 1.6 (my generous Dad's was the first car I drove/crashed after passing driving test) was slow and handling was revealed to be awful after I'd driven other cars. Have to say I'm loving this thread, some of my favourite cars here.
I think cars from this period were well developed but not yet excessively heavy and complicated, nice balance of rawness and refinement. Just more interesting and exciting to look at and drive than many a modern car IMO.
