Its a shame they didn't just use the time needed to create this mess to finish off all the customer MP4-C's properly.
I'd prefer them to invest the money in sorting out their F1 team, which seems to lurch from one cock-up to the next these days.

Love it.
The rear wheels tucked in like that remind me of cars like this:

Fair play for making it but it's bks

They've even named it after an SUV crossover. BMW should sue

Well going by the last grand prix, I think youl find that they seem to be doing quite well in the F1 stakes. Correct me if im wrong but did they not win the last race? I think they have also turned their pit stops around from the shambles earlier in the season to record breaking stops. I think they are doing just fine.

From what I have read on this X1 and people seem to be missing the point completely is that this is an individual one off. A bespoke project by a separate division within McLaren for an owner. It has nothing to do with the F1 racing department or for that matter the production line facility for the standard 12C car. Its looks and price have no baring on future models or resources.
I for one am not a fan of the car but at the end of the day the project and look of the car must have been the vision of the owner. He would not have bankrolled such a project only to be disappointed upon completion.

Its a one off, that's it! A re-bodied, re-styled, re-engineered MP4/12C. I say hats off to them for what looks like a well executed unit. A shame though that its been named after a BMW and has the front end looks of an Audi. Apart from that, well played.

It certainly won't look out of place at Pebble Beach, but it still looks like Helen Keller broke in and finished their drawings.

True. They definitely don't seem as good when they don't have a photocopy of the Ferrari manual.biggrin

Not exactly the best way to advertise your bespoke department is it ? Really surprised someone signed off on showing this at Pebble. They should have taken the 1.2M and then debadged it on the way out the door....stunningly bad. Luckily my opinion is worth nothing smile

One bespoke Ferrari based on the 599 GTB, Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta. They'll build anything the client wants too. Not exactly pretty or something you'd expect Ferrari to make. Those waffling on about Pagani making bespoke cars are not in the same conversation. His are refinements of an existing model which most performance car companies do anyway.

And to say the Mclaren was named after a BMW X1 and they should sue... The Bell X1 was the first plane to break the sound barrier so maybe Bell should sue both companies smile, but I jest. It's a one off. The customer was in the driving seat re what he wanted the car to look like etc.
I do think the X1 is an ugly SOB but I don't have to like it. Hats off to Mclaren and hope we get to see what MSO builds next.

Truly horribly, quite surprised they made it with their ethos.

But the point of it is to make the world aware they have a bespoke programme.

I'm not so sure.

I think it could be a great advert.

It certainly says look at me so everyone is going to know that Macca build bespoke.

And on top of that, it definitely is telling all potential customers that it can look like whatever they have dreamt their own car should look like since they were a kid.

as an aside,I think these one offs are hugely important. In our modern world where all cars are designed by committee and by lawyers it is going to transpire to have been vital to have guys like this putting their dreams into physical reality.

"the X1's influences extend from the automotive - Facel Vega, Chrysler D'Elegance Ghia, Buick Electra, Mercedes-Benz 540K and Citroën SM are among those name-checked - to the architectural, including the Guggenheim museums in New York and Bilbao. Airstream caravans, grand pianos, Audrey Hepburn and a Thomas Mann Mont Blanc pen are also in the mix. As is ... the humble aubergine"

They missed out the kitchen sink!

Refer to designer's handbook rule no. 14.3; just because you can, doesn't mean you should....

What a fantastic feat of engineering and science that is.

Imagine the power and technology required to take an Audi R8 and any modern Peugeot to near the speed of light then crash them together. Amazing.
