Is it time to restrict HGV's to inside lane?

Overtaking on the stretch of A52 described is hard in any car. The only opportunity you get is a long straight at Bottesford which usually has a steady stream of cars coming in the opposite direction anyway.
Fine. So... wait...? Nobody ever promised that you'd be able to travel at the speed limit, did they?PorkRind said:

All freight should be on rails. Simple really.
Nail on head hit. Tories put paid to this in the fifties tho. Fools.StuntmanMike said:
Not just that but in the last 20 years they have been tearing up the railway infrastructure on Trafford Park to name one, besides the post office don't even use the rail network anymore, also how are the goods going to get to the high street, the train fairy? .
localised shuttle lorrys from rsil to store, keeping them off the duals, big a roads and mways.PorkRind said:

People always look to something for the cause of their pains and never appreciate the bigger picture. Roads will be busy whether lorries are confined or not, people small bubble that they travel in will always by this way, just get on with life and watch your stress levels drop.

How can a truck travelling at its maximum permitted speed on an A-road, ever be considered a 'slow-moving vehicle'?
If you can't overtake a truck at 40mph, you must either be a crap driver or driving a crap car.....which is it???

a full emergency break .
Is that where you rush into a service area and winsomely dressed Starbuck's para-baristas rush out with a hospital trolley and carry you in while administering an emergency supply of woppafloppamoccacino, along with carefully selected morsels of freshly toasted fruit bread with skinny blueberry muffin to follow. Or does it have to be the bacon, sausage and egg panini to qualify as a full emergency break?FiF said:

As has already been said, if you cannot oveertake a truck that is limited to 56, in a car that will do double that, then perhaps it`s time to notify the dvla that you are not fit to drive anymore.

PH commandment no 4. Thou shall hate all trucks on the road even if it is delivering the iron lung that will keep you alive for the rest of your life.As has already been said, if you cannot overtake a truck that is limited to 56, in a car that will do double that, then perhaps it`s time to notify the dvla that you are not fit to drive anymore.
This argument is usually watered down into a 'replace articulated leviathans with small lorries' suggestion, which is blissfully ignorant of the fact that 1x 44t monster equals 10x 7.5t vans driven by people without a vocational licence. So, the solution is to replace one big lorry with ten smaller, poorly driven lorries: lets make you Prime Minister.

I'm not saying that more stuff couldn't be moved by rail, but to do it properly would take a huge amount of investment and alot of years to build.
when we had this discussion before on ph, someone suggested a similar idea, in that vans could move the goods from rail hub to local stores
I guess at a push a lwb transit, sprinter or similar will hold 3, maybe 4 standard size gkn type pallets. A standard 45ft artic trailer holds 26. A double deck trailer weight permitting, maybe capable at a guess of approx 50 pallets.
I'll let you do the maths on the extra costs, congestion and environmental impacts that 6-10 vans would have over 1 wagon.

So slow moving that you must be a crap driver or in a crap car to not be able to overtake it. But it couldn't possibly ever be considered slow moving. If you can't overtake a truck at 40mph, you must either be a crap driver or driving a crap car.....which is it???

Or alternatively they could just switch off the restrictors
^^^This^^^I spend a huge amount amount of time in the USA and the much vaunted Interstate system is pretty much a dual carriageway.
Trucks there are unrestricted and have the power to overtake whatever they want and quite happily roll along at whatever the speed limit is. Mostly 75mph in Texas.
It is super rare to get held up by "elephant racing" anywhere.
In anticipation.......
No, you don't see more accidents
Yes, I have got an HGV license and have driven one over there
I don't find the main routes any quieter tbh unless you're speaking about some road to nowhere in the middle of the desert.
Do you not remember the days before the stupid EU speed limits?

Yeah, being bullied in the outside lane by a fuel tanker at 70.Edit. Besides, firms are making cost savings at lower speeds. Removing the limiters will not make them go faster methinks
