Will 994 other people join me in chipping in a quid to buy it? If so I'll take it to a local quarry and push the useless piece of st into the water with the windows open.
Hateful conveyance.

I usually just read these forums to get what everyone is thinking, I have been a member for years because I placed an advert years ago.
Must say some of the posts are getting predicable...
Freeland, must be rubbish because the head gaskets go every other week. It's just not true.
Jaguar, will break down every week and leave you stranded by the road. Oh wait a minute that is true(in my experience).
Thanks for your contribution.I usually just read these forums to get what everyone is thinking, I have been a member for years because I placed an advert years ago.

You are kindly keeping the posts per head down. Some folks are averaging several thousand a year. And as a rule, the greater their tendency to post, the less worthwhile those posts are.
I suspect that you may have a life?

As a Disco man i would never look twice at this Freelander, but i have a general point to make :
The quality of what you can get for shed money is getting better all the time, manufacturers need to worry when 10-15 year old cars look and drive like new. In 1980 a ten year old was often a heap of rust, now they may be totally rust free.
Why buy a new car? The more computerised the more trouble ,soon we will have new- looking cars being scrapped , madness.
Keep that 2CV ,good working ones can't be bought for shed money.

I agree with both of you, the trolls are the ones that jump onto other peoples posts , cause they don't have anything else to do, when waiting for there mum to make there lunch

Had one of these for a almost a year as a runaround.
Good points:
1. Actually not bad to drive and when all working with the right tyres they're actually quite good off road for what they are. Superb in the snow (but I had one where the VCU etc was still working )
2. Decent driving position.
3. They don't rust and items like wings are plastic.
Bad points:
1. For all the nice little touches, some brummies ruined it by putting in random little features that would break or random mismatched parts.
2. The Head Gasket will fail. The K series pulls it along well enough, but must be straining it.
3. Niggles like "Will the VCU/diff explode before after or at the same time the head gasket goes.
Shame really as I originally wanted a Honda CRV, but after seeing 3 that were awful, I came across this and it was much better. Another BL/Rover missed opportunity as if they'd sorted the build quality and durability it wouldn't be a bad car at all.

The crazy the high number of these that appear on US car auction websites such as Copart and IAAI, all non-running. I knew they were bad, but I didn't know they were that bad. They sell all day long for $300~600, basically scrap prices. Not for me I am afraid, they make a P38A look reliable :-/
Ahhh I have fond memories of these when they first came out.......
A friend of mine bought one brand new, in about 1998, if memory serves me right he called it "a Yuppies Land Rover Discovery" quite ironic when you think about it!
Anyway, he was very very smug about it, until 4 maybe 5 days after he got it, the alarm would go off randomly.
The first occasion was when we were sitting outside a pub. Much to everyone there's annoyance.
Then about 2 weeks after that, a pipe or something came off the engine and chucked oil all over the engine.
That was fixed in a day or two at the dealer.
Then a week later the electric windows packed up. All of them! Just after he'd put a few quid in the car park machine!
Then a month later, the head gasket went in a spectacular fashion on the A127!
That was fixed. Then it went again. That was fixed. Then something happened to the 4 wheel drive and one wheel locked.
Then the head gasket went. Again.
By which point in about 6 months of owning it, it had only done about 1,500 miles and had spend about 4 months in the garage. He tried to get his money back (how we laughed when they said no!).
I think in the end he did some kind of deal and traded it in for MGF!
We still laugh about it now! He doesn't though!

If anybody says go for the late model 05 HSE, I have one piece of advise. DON'T! They are as bad as the rest, ours is a bag of ste! The sooner it has gone out of our lives the better. I don't know or care what I get for it in PX, but I will be grinning like a maniac when I leave that poor dealers. My wife has had it for just over a year and we regretted it almost immediately. I get the feeling the idiot who bought it new actually had options removed. no cruise, No heated screen, No pre heater etc. I haven't seen one with so little equipment. I was kicking myself for not going to look at it with her. And as for aircon, that's broke, heater not working, windows that do as they like and the car starts when it feels like it! I actually pity the poor deluded sole who buys my car and thinks for one moment they are gonna get any enjoyment from owning it. Put me off Landrovers big time!

Seems like there is a multitude of other reasons why the Freelander is rubbish, head gasket situation aside.

Pretty damning for a car that, although a big seller for its type, was still a relatively niche product.
The simple fact is that Land Rover chose to use an engine with a marginal cooling system, that simply wasn't up to the job of hauling 1700kg of 4wd. I daresay by mollycoddling the engine until fully warm, and checking the cooling system for level and leaks on a daily basis, you could mitigate the issue, but why should you have to?
WTF is this doing as shed of the week :/
Recently voted one of the least reliable cars in the UK I think (although could be wrong), something like 60% left on the road compared to 98% of the Honda equivalent.
I've spent the week driving a Defender 90 TD5 and it's awesome and an amazing driving experience, it makes me feel like a big kid. Surprisingly reliable too.
The Freelander on the other hand doesn't appeal in the slightest. It just doesn't have the Tonka Toy factor.
