Might sound a bit weird, but the reason why I'm not a massive fan of black wheels is because you can't see them. Its like your looking at a floating shell. Something like graphite grey looks better, IMO.

Silver would get lost against the bare ally sides of mine I think:
I'd disagree personally - the black tyres and green arches would provide a break between the wheel and bodywork, and currently the wheel/tyre combo looks lost in the arches.

edit: I think a touch of green rim tape and maybe some painted calipers would look the business.
Yeah I've been debating the rim tape idea, as I think it looks good on iiyama's car with the same wheels (hope he doesn't mind me posting a pic...much better photo than mine anwyay smile.

I take what you mean about the distinction between wheel and tyre getting lost, but I still think silvers would look a bit odd. It's a bit worse in my pic as the bright sky behind is reducing the contrast somewhat.
The callipers are already painted...black (in my defence they came like that)

Generally, I'd agree with the OP. Only a handful of these suggestions (orange Lambo and green Porsche to name the two best contenders) would actually look better with their black wheels.

My old Exige S looked far better on the factory black alloys than it ever would have done on silver:

My 205 GTI on black o.e 1.9 Speedlines:

My Mk1 Focus RS on black Compomotive MO6 alloys - again if these were silver they wouldn't go with the carbon fibre exterior trim I had made for the car:

I hate black wheels but the exige looks right on them as for the 205! Ruined, the rs I can't make my mind up, they just look right on the standard wheel

Most black wheels are such that you can't even tell what the wheel looks like - they just blend into a dark shadow circle of tyre and wheel.

Which kinda defeats the object of having snazzy wheels if they just look like steel wheels from anything more than 4 feet away.

Plus nothing looks worse than brown tyre on black rim.

My Genesis coupe 3.8 disagree's with your black wheel statement haha.

If they are well finished I love them on certain color cars.

Looking at all the pics, i'd say it's 50-50 so far. Some cars look great with black wheels....

...while some cars looks are completely ruined with them.

And there's no rule that dictates body type or number of doors, it depends purely on each individual car and whether the set of eyes looking upon it work properly or not.

Having said that, black wheels are better on every car than 20"+ wheels.

I prefer black wheels as they look more aggressive. Silver looks boring especially on a silver car.

It helps if you have ugly alloys like on mine as it hides them away..

Yeah the 205 doesn't suit black 1.9 Speedline's, not helped by the 'sport' body kit.

I suppose 'no' would be the straight answer, although I like thread titles like this which push peoples' buttons and start a spirited discussion!

It's totally subjective ofcourse, and very dependent on car and paint colour.

Black or very dark wheels often give a nice utilitarian or (dare I say it) 'motorsport'-esque finishing touch to a car. Much like a chrome finished wheel, Im less enamoured with a huge black alloy as it smacks of 'image' rather than being functional.

I had bronze coloured Volk TE37s on my mkiv Supra for ages before sorting out some rather spiffing 17 inch Advans in black:

I was thoroughly pleased with the newly-found aggression they gave to the car, although I suspect the gunmetal paint played a big part. Black wheels may have looked rather tarty on a red Supra, for example.

Black wheels on a white car jar me a little, as they sort of disappear in contrast to the paint. They do not approach the levels of evil found in black cars with white wheels (or any car with white wheels) though.

Anyway, plenty of pics posted already demonstrating that many cars actually look 'better' with black wheels.

Note: Im well aware that my old Supra will be regarded as 'ricey' by many. At the ripe old age of 32, I'd probably agree. Was perfect for me as a mid-20s bachelor though!

Yet to see a car which to my eyes looks better with black wheels. Probably lack of clearly defined contrast with tyre colour means they never look right to me.

With the above in mind, I recently had a spare set of wheels finished in Brilliant White. Brilliant contrast ... wink

OK I revise my statement slightly. On some cars black wheels may look better, but only if the car is Silver already. But I would say most of the pictures shown here, at least in my opinion, partially proves my statement right. Most of the pictures don't look any better and in most cases look worse with black wheels to my eyes. On most of them the wheel design or style can't even be made out and in some pictures there may as well be a solid black circle when thee wheel and tyre should be.

I also dislike black wheels.

To be honest, I'm not even sure I like mine but they came on the car and it's not worth the cost to get them changed.

There's another point; black wheels generally don't photograph well.

Similar to the issue photographers have trying to capture good images of a black car, particularly in dull conditions.

Lighter coloured paint schemes emphasise the effect further.

I'd also say that dark wheels can help to show off nice brakes rather well.

I clearly have a thing for darker wheels, but I definitely prefer the smoked Subaru wheels.
After all the (mostly) horrible blackness in this thread, that is actually very refreshing!

Sorry if that offends people on here, I just think the black alloy craze looks awful on road cars, but not so bad on the more track focused ones I suppose.
