Of course, an injected turbocharged f type 1.7 was fitted to the volvo 400series and would (and does easily) fit under the bonnet of this - giving a reliable 125odd bhp and none of the hot start probs of the Gt Turbo. The other engine that would shoe horn in is the 16v F7 from the clio 16v - I have seen this done and it ahem, makes for an "interesting" car on standard suspension

This one has no appeal to me at all. Horrible colour, interior looks naff and the 1.7 engine is neither here nor there. Spend extra and buy the turbo or don't bother IMO.

So does the ph2. With it anti-perc fan blowing at the carb. I never ever experienced hot start issues on my gt turbo once in seven years of it being my daily.
Glad to see a R5 on shed, always wanted a monaco!
Someone get it bought quickly.....seems like Renault 5's are experiencing a price jump.....

Nah, I had a GT Turbo, whilst tuneable, the 1397 is a horrid little engine of ancient ancestory, I'd much rather a fuel injected over cam lump - the 1.7 prv engine is (if well maintained and set up right) a very decent engine I never ever experienced hot start issues on my gt turbo once in seven years of it being my daily.

I had one of these many years ago - I was working for a couple of traders and used to buy the older cars and sell them through the papers. The R5 Monaco was a trade in which my boss's son had been using to get to Uni. I normally dealt in older, cheap cars so I was pretty impressed with the palatial leather interior. I remember trying to sell it through a private advert and failing, ending up selling it at auction to get my money back. My efforts weren't helped when the local paper misprinted my C/LOCKING abbreviation as CLOCKING. I remember my boss phoning up pretending to be a buyer, asking if I had clocked it.

Back at the start of summer when my MX5 was due for it's MOT I was contemplating what I'd replace it with if it failed (I'd found water in the foot well in heavy rain so thought I was looking at a cracked/rusty floor). Renault 5 GTX was top of my list, though at the time I couldn't find any '5s for reasonable money. If this had a long MOT and I no longer had my faithful runabout, I'd be tempted. There's just some thing about the older small French cars.

So I read SOTW on Friday, and enjoyed this week's example. Then yesterday I had to drop the wee man and wife off somewhere in Edinburgh for a friend's b-day party. There under a covered communal car park was a forlorn H reg, champaign gold 5. No tax disc in the window (I figure that's cos its been there a while rather than the recent change), covered in dust, tyre propped under one sill and the drivers window down an inch or two. Sad sight. As I left, I had a glance at the tailgate and it was only a bloody Monaco! What are the odds?
Anyway, good shed this week. Reckon it would make an amusing little sleeper if left standard looking but with decent wedge of money spent on a proper turbo conversion. Those seats might be a bit slidey if cornering with enthusiasm though.
