Could never get over the styling of these, even up to now. The front was hideous, back end looked a mess; especially the saloon which had an American 70's/80's look to it. No wonder it flopped. It was a nice place to sit inside; but would never justify the outside of it.
I even remember on Top Gear they got all kinds of people to say it was ugly. The weird thing is it also didn't bear any resemblance to the rest of the Ford range.
I guess it was also suicide on Fords part to make it flop by doing things like;
st styling
No manual option
Way over the scales in weight

It never sold anything near the previous model and was a rare sight on the road, people opted for the better styled Mondeo instead.

My dad had one of these - he's had some amazing cars in lots of different parameters, but he still goes on about his 24V Scorpio...

BOA/BOB??! Eh? Later 12V production was carried out at Wellingborough as the Cologne plant wound down but that was a different project.

The Mk1 24v Engine was an "FBA" and the later facelift was powered by an "FBC".

FBB was a still born 4x4 Sierra 24v "super-XR4x4" variant which never made production.

I remember these being laughably hideous when they came out, but in a post Peugeot 207 world it seems fairly inoffensive. There are so many cars you can buy today that are so much worse the hatred seems unjustified.

I was amazed to see a silver one in the flesh today in a superstore car park - can't remember the last time I saw one on the road..

It's definitely not conventionally handsome like an E39 5-Series or Omega but these do have a certain appeal, especially in a time of generic one-box ecoblobs. I agree that it'd be a shame if they disappeared entirely. - I'd much rather drive one than much of the boring stuff I see on the roads day to day.

Am I the only one who really doesn't get the hate for these? No, they're not pretty, but they're no worse than a Mercedes W/S210 and more attractive than an 850/V70 or a Poxall Omygawd. Pretty decent rear-drive chassis, a lovely zingy (and tunable) V6, one of the comfiest interiors I've ever sat in, loads of space - why on earth would you want to put the engine in a Crapi or Grandada? Come on! If I could find a tidy late-model post-facelift 24V estate, I'd be seriously tempted to run it as a tidy winter barge. They're far too good and far too interesting to just scrap.

Weigh it in so there's less ugly car on the road? Bit of a waste, especially when Nissan will still chuck out thousands of Pukes this year. You could probably crash a Scorpio into a Multipla and still end up with something less Horrendous to look at than that aborted 'funky looking' scrap pile.

I've got a funny feeling the paint may have actually been called aubergine. That, or so many people referred to it as such, it stuck.

I had the standard 'cheap bhp' use out of that engine (well, the BOA). Popped in to a 4x4 Sierra straight on to the manual gearbox. Could pick a Granada, put the engine and brakes into the Sierra, sell the rear LSD to a kit car builder, eBay bits of trim and weigh it in. Worked out cost neutral. It was such an obvious engine donor that I'm surprised to find one still in the front of the original car.

Genuinely love the design of the Scorpio Granada. Those bulbous headlights may not be to everyone's taste, but credit to Ford Europe for trying something different!

I'm amazed ford managed to stuff this up so much.

The Granada line done pretty well in the cut price exec market.

Then they overhauled it to this, somehow thought it was a good move.

Buying Volvo and Jaguar then meant any real serious push into that market would eat their own lunch so decided to put the X-type together instead.

Sad thing is all they had to do was bring over the Falcon from Oz instead of that mess
