RE: Shed Of The Week: Renault Vel Satis
Discussion
Great SOTW and sod the dodgy engine. However, just to be pedantic, that wood trim may be maple, but small squares of faux marquetry don't make it (Matt) birds eye maple. The unhappy gestation of the Vel Satis is illuminated by this quote from Patrick Le Quement - interviewed by Car- "The Vel Satis was done at a time when I was not active in the meetings. In one of these meetings it was decided that we would do the Vel Satis, and not the design that I favoured. I did not like it but I had to become the person who spoke for the design. I still believe it had many things that were good about it, though." Mind you the last sentence sounds like a "massif" post hoc rationalisation.

I remember sitting in one as a kid when they first came out.
I thought they were awesome.
However, since then, the only thing awesome about them is the interior. And only because it's different.
The exterior. Well. The less said the better!
What's wrong with the exterior? Looks no worse than most mass market cars today and better than many. I thought they were awesome.
