You mean they need to fit an appalling gearbox and spend thousands on a carbon fibre roof which saves about 5kg?
Lets not mention the cardboard boot either...But seriously, this kind of car does nothing for me. Its meant to be a practical car, but then they remove things that are practical. That makes it somewhat less practical, and in that sense, it misses its original mark.
Fine, if people are not after a practical car. But then, if that was the case, would you not look at alternatives that were slanted a little more in that direction, ie a dedicated 2 seater.
I personally find cars like this stuck in no mans land. They won't make or break the company, and sure it may be to some extent a halo car if someone can figure out how to apply the results to cooking models in order to shift more product, but thats not exactly easy from the comments I'm seeing here.

VW can never win anything on PH
'The Golfs too bland and boring and offers no driver involvement and will only ever be used to go to Tesco'
...makes lighter track focused 310hp manual Clubsport S with FWD Nurburgring record
'Who cares about the Nurburgring, this Golfs gone too far its not even practical to go to Tesco in'

Someone on another site also pointed out that the clock was started at the pit exit but stopped at the line, so not actually a full lap.
That someone might want to learn why they all do that then so they don't make them selves look daft, all comparable times are done the same way.Meridius said:

But what record did it achieve? This car is not as will be sold, so not a standard road car record. Record for fastest 2 seater hatchback that will not arrive from the factory in this state perhaps?'The Golfs too bland and boring and offers no driver involvement and will only ever be used to go to Tesco'

And the rest of the points are valid. Its no longer suitable as an everyday car and would get spanked by a proper 2 seater. So what is the point in this car other than VAG doing anything to try and get a fwd lap record back even though it still doesn't count as a production car.

Care to explain why they don't just finish the lap? Or is it to pretend they went faster than they actually did?
Because otherwise it's a 13mile cooldown lap, cross line, slow & dive into old pits, done. VW are not alone you know, its been the standard way it's done for a long time.rb5er said:

It got spanked by a 4 door. Giulia QV to be precise. Rumour has it the 280bhp Giulia Q4 has been round in 8'00" dead as well. And the rest of the points are valid. No. As said before by others, testing a car that hasn't even been produced yet in a form that will not be sold is just b*llsh*t
Build and sell the car and then test it in the exact same form available (even if only available as options).
Otherwise it's just a marketing exercise to gauge or raise interest before launching something similar or maybe they had no confidence in their product to risk producing and selling it first and then find out it was too slow.

Care to explain why they don't just finish the lap? Or is it to pretend they went faster than they actually did?Al very much "who cares?" until you think that they beat the record by such a tiny margin and VW's reputation is muck after the emissions scandal.
