So, excluding coupes that happen to have hatchbacks, what in your opinion is the best-looking (workaday) hatchback ever? To try and keep it broad, I have tried to go for fairly standard versions of the car rather than the hot versions, which tend to look pretty good anyway! As a general rule, I tend to find that the 3 door version (where available) tends to have a more pure look about it than the 5 door version.

1970s

1980s

1990s

but this deserves an honourable mention because it still looks so right (although I don't believe that the bread and butter version has dated nearly so well).

2000s

but a 3 door mk1 Focus still looks sharp, especially in ST spec

2010s

but the current Fiesta and Polo also look inherently "right".

The mk1 Golf and 205 still have an inherent rightness to their designs, which in my opinion is timeless but it would probably have to be the Alfa, especially in GTA spec (but even a standard 2.0 TS still looks great) and much nicer looking than Alfas current hatchback efforts.

So, what in your opinion is the best-looking hatchback ever (try to keep it broad, ie one that still looks good in base spec, as well as "GTi" spec)?
Sorry OP. What's the red blob at the bottom? I genuinely have no idea!

Enough of your modern rubbish! tongue out The last iteration of the first hot hatch

Love the Sud, but pretty sure it started life as a booted, 2 or 4 saloon. The hatchback arrived with the MK2 Versions in the early 80s.

Only PHers could have such a 'broad' interpretation of hatchback... hehe

Or perhaps the concept of the coupe is a regional thing and they are simply known as hatchbacks elsewhere! scratchchin

Great pics though
So how are you defining a hatchback?

2 doors and a big back door to the boot?

Though, at the time, they were considered a little weird, the Japanese offerings of "Minimerica" are, in retrospect, very well styled.
This was the Colt Celeste but you also had the Datsun 120Y Coupe and others of that ilk (Renault 15 and 17) but though hatchbacks, they were classed as coupes:

In fairness, when Ford launched the Capri II, it was very much as a hatchback and it had 4 seats and plenty of boot, probably the equal of the decade later XR3i.

The later Mercury Capri RS was a fine looker too - Fox Mustang underpinnings

Id agree with you for most of them, sweeping back tends to indicate a coupe. The drop back on the Ferrari FF/GTC4Lusso is very much a hatch shape though (unless you believe all that 'shooting brake' milarky).

If we're moving away from traditional hatchbacks and hot hatches, I'll throw this in.
