The mx5 clubs is a weird one not done much with the mxoc way to old for me most like slow drives for 30 miles then afternoon tea at a very posh restaurant etc and the love of chrome tat is eye opening. The mx5 nutz forum used to be great huge event meets only a few year back 2015 had the biggest ever stand at japfest2 with just shy of 150 cars took up the entire infield section of the first corner at donnington park made the 20 cars parked next to us in a Scooby club tiny.

Then the forum got sold to a candian company which has history of buying forums for profit on the traders and then the forums die pretty quickly. Yep same as happened too mx5 nutz. I used too arrange a lot of runs and events for the welsh lot which was usually a big turn out when the forum got sold the interest dropped off. I'm still within the local mx5 scene which is held now by facebook groups but once you see what goes on behind closed doors its full of back stabbing s you do nothing while around you but slagg you off to others.

Its now split into several area groups maninly on facebook tbh but its lost its spark and meets are dropping off outside of the owners club I'm done with it now after a year or so of crap.

Now if you start a thread with whats the least friendliest car scene many of these supposed good scenes will be mentioned, its personal preference.

Chrome tat aside, I quite like that mix to be honest. Like you said, horses for courses.

Defender2.net forum. Wealth of knowledge on all manner of Defender foibles(yes there's plenty to talk about....) traders involved too , Martin who runs it I also has Disco and FFRR forums. Enjoyed my time with them.

The Lotus Forum is pretty damn friendly. Within two weeks of being on there i was after a powerfold wing mirror switch to replace the non powerfold switch in the door (all Evora have powerfold mirrors just not with a switch if it wasn't specced from factory). One of the guys sent me one he had lying around... No payment was asked for.. Bought a book from the web store "Evora - Sublime Supercar" and it was delivered personally as the guy lives around the corner... Met up with a load of members and even though there was a diverse age spread everyone was positive and had solid input. Forum is always busy, loads of people just wanting to help or inform.

Prior to that i was on FocusRSOC and that was a similar scene. Very engaging online community that matched its online presence and approachability in person.

On the other hand some of the more 'elite' groups such as RSOC and SELOC are pretty dire and i wouldn't go back on there if i were forced.

Cortina owners, not a one Mk club but a general forum called buy sell cortina, wierd name but friendly and helpfull.

I understand that car clubs can be useful for technical info, special parts and whatnot, and I take my hat off to the people who give up their time to make these things happen.

But I've never really understood the 'social' side of car clubs.
Do I want to stand around in a pub car park looking at cars like mine? Well maybe for 10 minutes. Once.
Do I want to go on a run with lots of other cars like mine? Well no, not really.

I know, I know - I'm the wierd one.

No, not weird but you've either been to bad car meets or don't enjoy some car type events.

Seriously, if you are a car enthusiast, you need to look further if that is your experience of car clubs.

I have little time to spend with car clubs but events such as driving skill or endurance tests have been fun. Even things like treasure hunts which sound childish can be a good laugh.

Car clubs can arrange things like track days at low cost as well as other activities which would be either difficult to arrange on your own, more expensive or just easier to do if someone else does the organising. I did a parachute jump through a local car club which I would never have done with just me and a few mates.

No, I see that point of view. I have to say that the ProjectPuma forum is superb, with loads of brilliant advice for tackling the, er, foibles of the Puma. I met up with a few of the members at a generic Ford meeting and they were brilliant guys. Some of the other Ford fans there were a bit, er, odd, though, and not the kind of people I'd normally chose to spend time with... even if some of the cars were quite nice.

The point Swisstoni was making was that he wouldn't get anything out of the kind of club he's describing. I don't think I would. He just hasn't been involved in a club that does more involving things.

Any social gathering is about sharing and interacting. You have to give as well as take, otherwise it becomes dull.

Imagine PH if it was just a group of people talking bks.

Oh, just noticed, he did say he was getting his coat.

Sadly, appears the online forum is pretty much deserted nowadays though.
From 2000 onwards SIDC was awesome and spawned some equally awesome regional clubs like Kentscoobies and Essex Scooby Crew. People would often refer to them in terms of social groups, or a way of life rather than car clubs.
I think the reason is that people were more 'Enthusiasts' rather than just owners.


ANY club where the members are enthusiastic about the cars themselves and hence get pleasure from helping other members with their cars - will always be a nicer place to be, than a club where people join simply because they own that car and 'want' something FROM the club.

I had good experiences of the Alfa Romeo Owners' Club, Scooby people were very friendly and Smart owners were too.

We used to run 'mod' days with our MX5 club. Every few months, we would all go to a friends house (plenty of parking seeing as there were 20+ of us at times) and just all dive in and do all those jobs so often required. If someone was great at swapping over hoods, they may do several; someone else would be helping change suspension, others would be fitting exhausts, there was a workshop for fabrication, wire etc for stereo installs, every tool you would ever need, huge ramps, loads of food and drink....you get the gist. All free of charge and a mixed bag of people with all sorts of skills from all types of professions.

You can end up lifelong friends with people in these situations even if you sell up!

I find it really odd that because a car is affordable to a wider audience you view that as a negative. It's because more people can afford the cars that ultimately fuels the club. If you had to rely on the people who buy/lease the cars new you would have a rather lame club in my opinion.

Using Ed38 as an example the people who get the new cars early on and pay whichever tuner is deemed the bees knees do a few mods get treated like gods when those who may have picked up a car at the much lower end of the financial scale and do obscene amounts of work and gather huge amounts of information themselves get absolutely no recognition at all.

I dont really care. It was done. Nothing broke. Noone died. Cars 2 years sold.
I hardly got into an argument with him at all and if you actually read the thread, you'll see the friendly attitude of PH members jumping on the insult me bandwagon

Interesting reading smile I wouldn't really say it was a 'massive spat' imo. Lots of naysayers and insult mongers laying into him, which he defended himself with some good humour laugh

Chassis notching isn't my bag, but I've seen far far worse mods than that. It's easy to speculate what could happen in a crash, but every crash is a survival lottery, modified or otherwise. I know the OEM engineers on board here feel compelled to warn against such modifications and we respect their opinions, but not even they can 100% guarantee the car will fold up like origami if it drove into a bollard.
