A replacement for the jaguar XK with an updated interior, nice warbling v8 under the bonnet and a manual box. More of a grand tourer than the F type, plus I'm 6ft 4 so needs to be spacious.

Nice thread. I'd been thinking of a 'combine the features/characteristics of your favourite cars' thread, but this one describes it better.

1.The go-kart-like raw involvement, steering, handling, balance of a Lotus Elise 111S;
2. N/A petrol RWD, manual with LSD (see 3). I don't care where the engine is;
3. modern lights, interior heating, heated seats and LSD to cope wth the winter;
4. the reliable, simple, robust mechanicals and easy, cheap home maintenance of an MX-5;
5. delete electronic toys. Electric windows, heated seats (see 3) - that's it.
6. a spine-tingling exhaust note worthy of deleting in-car entertainment.
7. 2+2 configuration, decent luggage space, 35+mpg
8. available for £20k at 3 years old, with plenty to choose from and still in great condition.

There is always going to be a compromise when designing a car, or anything for that matter.
The thread title. Did you read it?

There is still going to be a compromise. A 6,000hp Exige that weight 2kg and costs 50 quid?

Would love a Honda S2000 with a flappy paddle gearbox as a weekend toy.

Another one would be a Jaguar XKR with properly usable rear seats. That would probably be the ultimate daily driver for me.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage (1994) but with BMW 5 Series levels of build quality, fuel economy and user friendly-ness.

Hence the reason when new car time comes I go all goo-goo for an Aston Martin, then compromise and look at 911's, then end up with a 5 series again!

E38 750 with the running gear from the new 760 would be rather fantastic, as would an e39 M5 with a F10 M5 engine paired to a manual.

A 4x4 with the styling, cachet and refinement of an early L322 Range Rover (in dark green with 18" wheels), the off-road performance and lightness of a Bowler Wildcat, the on-road handling of a Porsche Cayenne and the performance of a modern SVR. Oh, and with all the modern features like reversing cameras, etc. Must be reliable too and have 20,000 mile service intervals that cost no more than £300; 35 mpg as a minimum and tow 3.5 tonne.

Yeah, I know...what a load of incompatibility.. nice to dream though. smile

A Ferrari F50 is the only grail car for me. F1 derived V12, carbon chassis, and not much else. biggrin
