Had a Jaguar sovereign XJ6 years ago and I would say that was an old man's car, then a Jaguarsport XJRS 6.0, not an old man's car.

These days old men drive Ford Fusions and Nissan Notes around here.

27 with an XKR here
Adore it. NOT an old man’s car in my eyes- if driven like an old man sure!
Maybe the 4.0 XK, older straight 6 XJ etc might be such.

Get a fast jag in the right spec- they look stunning and are lethal haha!

I was at a Waitrose store today and saw an automatic K11 Nissan Micra park in one of the Blue Badge spaces - that's an Old Man's car!

But any Honda Jazz must fit the bill too. laugh

Surely any X-type is just a wannabe Jaguar owner - they aren't generally regarded as the pinnacle of Jaguar engineering!

I'll be 60 next year, but won't own anything like those!

Have a phwoar from me. I’m 27, and I’ve had my XJ (2011 poverty spec (see below)) since I was 25 - I’ve had no ‘old man’ comments, but I suspect it’s because I’ve got no friends...

Debating whether to man up and buy a petrol one next, or rather, whether to live with the fuel bill!

What sort of MPG you getting out of the XJ? I've currently got a G250 Lexus for my wafting and although lovely, it's ridiculously heavy on fuel.

On a run, I can get better MPG out of my V10 R8 eek

Indeed. What all my non-PH friends said when I bought the XJR 4 years ago.
Surprised by the pace mind.

Purchased for the power plant in all honesty.
Nicely complements the 'mid-life' Z4MC in-line 6 and the 'rat-boy' WRX turbo flat 4.

I’ve smoked about in estate cars for the last 10 years. I had my first over 20 years ago.

The only one that had any sort of image was probably the Alfa.

As a general rule, consider the person calling your pride and joy an 'old man's car' to be envious. They might not be but it saves you from being annoyed.

I think perhaps Corvette owners might be even older than the average Jaguar owner.
I had a new XJ6 Sport when I was 45.
Now I am 72 I have a Corvette Z06.
Average age of other owners is in the sixties!

The double glazing on my old man's car prevent me from hearing the abuse from any passing yoofs, plus I can't hear them over Radio 3

I had a XF S Estate in Italian Racing Red for best part of three years - it was a fantastic car (I was 32 IIRC when I got it)

I'm now driving around in an XC90 at 35. I feel old!

I blame the kids but every time i've changed cars i've gained two seats and lost two cylinders:

Look forward to seeing your 8-seater, 2 cylinder beast when you next swap cars!

Glad to see I'm not the only bloke in his mid 20's who's after an XJ. Hats off to you for actually buying one though, I'm still in my old 75 Tourer. How do you find it?
It’s exactly as lovely as you’d expect.

I got a good deal on mine, bought it from someone I know, but having said that I’d have rather saved up and bought a higher spec model - for obvious reasons.

Also, there was a suspension/chassis upgrade for the 2014MY which really improved the ride quality, which is the biggest drawback for mine, a rather fidgety ride simply not on par with other big cars of the time.

BUT having said all that, just get one. They’re brilliant.

My commute runs from Staffordshire into derby, and roughly 20 miles of the 30 each way is dual carriageway outside of peak times, so is about as good as a commute can get.

My lifetime average for 31,000 miles is 39.7 - I’d like more obviously, but I do a lot of social miles ferrying my offspring, and Mrs OGR4M to and fro which is what kills a car of this weight.

The old man's car I had was a '78 XJS. It did 12mpg until an old racing driver acquaintance asked to drive it, put it into reverse at 60 and destroyed the gearbox. The replacement gearbox brought the consumption up to 18. A friend had a newer one at the same time which had instant consumption figures on the dash. His hobby was to see how bad he could get it. On one stint of winter night shifts he came out of his house to find the car frozen up. He scraped a couple of portholes in the ice, got in and blasted the car from one side of town to the other to work. On arrival the guage showed 1mpg and he proclaimed himself the winner.

I got grief for having an X-Type as daily snotter in my 20's.

Didn't think the car deserved the press it got generally to be honest.

I'm with both in this. Mine is a diesel, so FWD only, however it is a later, well specified automatic with all the features the car should've had from the beginning. It's not dynamically groundbreaking, but neither is a 320d SE.

Usually heavily slated for the Mondeo connection by people who haven't driven one.

I enjoy my "dirty old man's car". I especially enjoy that I care very little about what people think. It's the only car I've ever had that "non car" people ask me about, actually. Nobody ever said to me "do you still have the Merc?" or " how's the Volvo?"

I think a lot of this X Type hatred has arrived after the car went out of production, or towards the end of its life when all you could buy were the diesels and the rather nicer V6s had been pensioned off. If I recall the road test verdicts were largely positive. In EVOs road test, the X Type 3 litre was only pipped to the post by the 330i because the latter was able to clear 150 MPH on the autobahn and burn off an Audi TT. Unfortunately the Ford Mondeo diesel that the X Type uses has not worn well with age, in my opinion being one of the smokiest and noisiest diesel engines out there. Perhaps this colours people's opinion of X types now.

As for Jag, I think they do have an old man image, but it wouldn't stop me buying one, especially as I am now approaching "old man" territory myself!
