Harrismonkey had one for a bit under a year - he used it quite a bit - it looked like fun to me...

p.s. whatever you say about the price, it's WAY less than a Singer and probably a safer place for your money (not that I'd say no to a Singer)
I was passed several times on my way back from work by Chris in his 4.0RS. My lift share was a bit perplexed one evening when i urged him to try and chase down the car smile

I may be wrong but I think you have missed the point of Alpine’s McLaren reference.

It wasn’t to compare it to the Porsche under discussion . It was a throwback to another correspondent’s peculiar decision to make exactly that comparison !

I'm in the overpriced camp too.

At 200k maybe I can see why... but over 300k+? No way.

Does this offer a driving experience 2-3 times better than a 991.2 GT3 RS (which also happens to be powered by a 4.0)?

yes because it's a manual ;-)

but what it does not offer is 2-3 times a better drive than a 997.2 GT3 at £95k.

like most RS products you can get 90% there with the non RS models for less than 1/2 the price.

And the same can be said of most “specials”.

Would a 3.6 997.1 GT3, or a 3.8 997.2 be worth what they are now if a 4.0 wasn't circa £300k?

We will never know.

As for 991 GT3 prices, in a way, they are less relevant - very different cars really.

I'd love one of these, will never be able to afford one but if I won the euromillions it would be on my list. I can understand how the prices are so high as for some they're motoring nirvana and we're not likely to ever see such a thing again, logic and the sum of parts don't equal something's value.

The same can be said of all cars, they're a perfect example of diminishing returns. A £50k car is not in any objective sense 'twice' as good as a £25k car. And that's before intangibles like rareness, desirability, etc. are thrown in.

An interesting theory; so the rarity of the 4.0 and, likewise (I guess) the 991 R make them mavericks? Perhaps.

Agreed.

The market says a 1987 Escort RS Turbo is worth £60k (at auction in 2015). Maybe it is worth that to somebody but it seems ridiculous to me.
Especially when you can pick up a lovely 986 Boxster for £5-6k.
(Mid engine, N/A, 6 cylinder, manual, RWD, convertible, Porsche)

There’s no right or wrong here just subjective opinion.

Chew on this one .... is it worth £400K more than a regular 458 Spider ?

And that's a cheap one! The Speciale Coupes look relatively good value compared to that!

Good to see that the prices of these are coming down form £400K.

Maybe when they go down more I would consider one

I remember Chris Harris buying one on finance and the forums having a melt down over it. He sold it back to the dealer for a considerable profit if I remember correctly. There’s a couple of good videos on it on his old YouTube channel.
Remember that yes but how on earth did he get hold of one as they only seem to be allocated to billionaires?

I bought a mint 1986 Escort RS Turbo in 1989 for £6300. £60k for the inferior 87 Escort RS Turbo in 2015 is beyond ridiculous. Unless £60k is pocket change.

The one most people got in a right old froth about that went for £60k in 2015 was a 1985 Series 1
Top notch Series 2s have gone for 30-40k at most, same as 205Gtis and Golfs of that era.

You can still buy useable examples of all of those hot hatches for a 1/4 or less of those prices
Not sure if you can do the same for a GT3 4litre though?
In turn those GT3s look value for a 911 compared to those 911 2.7 RS from the 70s....

That is, unless you really want a 911 2.7 RS - then nothing else will do of course!
