Starts at £45k.... C'mon. These cars were aimed at those who's willies aren't for show in the past. Surely this is technically a chunky looking Disco Sport, alternative Discovery or a paired down Sport? All of which cross over at a number of price points. I'm sure it will grow on me but the top of the line £75k hoon spec car is pretty much up against an F Pace SVR or RR Sport SVR and that's in the same JLR stable.... because let's face it. Most of these aren't going off road.. It just makes the JLR offering even more confusing when you add in a Velar, F pace, E pace..
Great write up by the way. And I think in the right colour (in isolation to the rest of the line up) it will look like a good car.
It really isn’t up against those two cars you mention.Great write up by the way. And I think in the right colour (in isolation to the rest of the line up) it will look like a good car.

In fact it’s nowhere near being up against them
I like it. It looks good in photo's, which IMO, is rare for modern cars, they generally look better in the flesh. So that bodes well. The simplistity of the commercial spec variant is very nice without all the tat hanging off it that I suspect most will end up being sold with.
I think JLR might have just about pulled off the impossible in successfully recreating one of the most iconic cars ever.

£51k all in, and I can't even have it in orange. Why can't I have it in orange?
I'm sure whatever the JLR bespoke team is called will happily do you one in orange for the right price. It'll be no time before G4 lookalikes are on the road.Although it would make even more sense to get one properly wrapped.

I suspect it is something to do with the 300kg roof load capacity, which is (I think) three or four times what most cars can take - so a strong support for the roof. You can get a roof tent for it!I'd have one ahead of a D5, although the economy figures look pretty terrible and way worse than D5 - 2100kg for the 90 has something to do with that, I suspect
I think the rear three quarter view looks most Defender-like and the shoulder running along the side and bonnet is definitely Defender. The Disco Sport has recently been D5-ed to move away from this.
Oh, and everybody moaning about the price - the last of the line V8 was £150k wasn't it? (I know that's not typical) And the highest levels of old Defender were in the region of £65k I think. I had a play on the configurator (where I could not find the 7-seat or jump seat options, unfortunately - couldn't find the fabric sliding roof either) and it is def possible to have steelies on the 110 - it's an option to change from standard alloys at no cost (aka giving LR more profit). G Wagen starts at £95k
Very cheap of LR to ask extra £ for heated windscreen washer jets - should be standard
Colours are a bit disappointing - all soft pastels for the green and blue, no solids other than black and white iirc
No six cyl diesels yet. No electric one coming - with the diesel / petrol economy figures that may be wise but disappointing for me - i have an iPace at the moment (have had D3 and D4 before) and would have much preferred a LR EV. Only PHEV coming for defender, though I have seen mention of full EV for D5
110 for me with 7 seats please - huge space behind the second row "all the car you need". Won't be cheap but I think i would much prefer to any competition from.
took my daughter to Uni in Edinburgh at the weekend for the first time. Could not believe the number of Range Rovers, Range Rover Sports, Discoveries, Touaregs, Discovery Sports at her Halls - will be interesting in a couple fo years to see if any / many have swopped to the Defender. Maybe I will look terribly nouveau if I do!
I am in the "love it" category.
I cannot imagine how difficult a proposition this must have been, given that the way cars have to be designed and built compared to the 1950's, then expecting it to be anything like the original is just madness, especially as the original was actually more than a bit crap in the whole "being a car you want to use everyday" kind of thing.
This will be fine on the motorway, great offroad and good for going to the shops.
I am loving the farmer spec one especially.
Well done JLR. You did it.

But it's not 300 kg, really. The video and promo material mention this figure, but very conspicuously they say 'static load'.Now that's fine for a tent thing which about 3 people will ever buy, but the permissible dynamic roof load is 100 kg which is pretty much the same as most estates and SUVs.

I think it's a grower...
Can you really imagine a farmer sticking the sheep in the back though?
If you can get a dead sheep in the front boot of a Testarossa and get back to the road, only needing to fold the door mirror back out once through the gate then it’s a possibility. It’s probably mostly dependent on how wealthy the farmer is. Can you really imagine a farmer sticking the sheep in the back though?
A little late to the party on this one.
OMG!!!!
I won't pass judgement on ability, although based on it's underpinnings I'm sure it is very car like on road and somewhat capable off road. But still a shame it has ended up with what it has.
Biggest surprise is the looks. Maybe it will look better in person, but it has a somewhat awkward, almost special needs proportions about it. Certainly an ugly version of the DC100 concept.
But my biggest take is, it doesn't look like an f'ing Defender!!!!!!!!!!!! Very much corporate Disco styling head on, but so few Defender styling ques. Such a disappointment, especially when companies such as Jeep, Toyota or Suzuki manage to hit the nail on the head in this regard.
I'm not saying it looks bad. But it looks like a generic Japanese offering form someone like Mitsubishi. Not a Land Rover.
However will wait and see.
