I’d expect this to cost in the £30k’s region - probably somewhere around £35k depending on spec.

Still stunned that they’ve mustered the guts to put out a 4wd 3 door hatchback. At least not a lot of competition these days!

Given Toyota’s favourable outlook on the aftermarket scene as well, this could be a legendary car.
If all the stats thrown around are true, then Toyota really do need a pat on the back.

How refreshing to read about this car when all you hear now is this unstoppable move towards all-electric cars.

surprised a 3 cyl 1.5 is pushing out 261 bhp. thats a highly strung motor.
ID prefer a 4 cylinder tbh... just feels like more potential..

This might be the first car where artificial pops and bangs from the exhaust are actually a good thing!

Yes! totally agree. Spare me the mockery of pops and bangs from a Merc A35. Only a true rally car should be making those sounds.

This just seems to get better and better.

I hope it's everything it is hyping up to be, does well and encourages the other manufacturers to follow suit.

Ford have managed 200bhp from a 1-5l 3. Cylinder turbo so 260 bhp shouldn't be to much of a stretch

And BMW manage 223 PS from the 1.5 triple in the i8. Still > 160 hp / l is pretty advanced. Good thing this is a Toyota...

Getting the power isn't really a problem, it is how it responds to throttle inputs and having a torque/power curve that you can live with in a road car that is the trick.

Evo, Autocar and AutoExpress now have detailed articles on it including a drive in the prototype. It's a 3-pot 1.6 permanent four-wheel drive 6 speed manual with more than 247bhp and more than 258lb ft of torque. Very interesting, where do I sign up biggrin

Cool, thanks for sharing!

Just had a quick read through the EVO piece. If this is true the whole thing is indeed _very_ promising.
Couple of bullet points:

  • Three-door carbon shell with aluminium roof, tailgate, bonnet, doors and front wings
  • Roofline 95mm lower, engine 21mm further back
  • Passive springs and dampers
  • Double wishbones rear suspension with wider front and rear tracks
This would explain 25k sales needed (in one year) for homologation.
From a regs perspective this is not a standard Yaris.

  • Permanent four-wheel drive with clutch pack diffs with 3 settings: 60:40 front-rear split, 30:70 and 50:50
  • Manual gearbox
  • 3 cyl 1.6 with over 250 PS and 350 Nm
It honestly sounds a bit mental. Love it! Don't understand how they can pull this off and have to partner with BMW for the Supra, but not complaining smile.

Respect to Toyota, they look to be going all out on this.

A unique body shell, engine and drivetrain. I thought this kind of thing was dead in the modern age - it looks amazing!!

Gotta say I'm impressed.

Guide price of £35-40k according to Auto Express.

Ah well, was nice dreaming.... could have been my first ever new car. Couldn't justify that for a little Yaris, no matter how good.

The German mags see it €32k for the base and €36k for the perf pack. And usually stuff is more expensive over here. Hope they won't wait too long with official prices...

Obvious that this will have to be a good bit more expensive than a Clio RS or Fiesta ST, no?

And we thought the homologation special was dead, not a bit of it!

Serious want for one of these, sounds like a real triumph.

It does sound chuffing excellent, I'm actually tempted although realistically I'll get to the point of weighing up the depreciation and decide I could buy another big old V8 for that and the cycle will continue getmecoat

So frickin' cool though, go Toyota!

Around €26k list. If we use the S1 as reference point, that started at €30k. But in comparison to the Yaris that is a parts bin special with a posh badge. The good thing is that they need to sell at least 25000 in one year. Not gigantic volume but still enough they hopefully can't go totally mad on the price.
