RE: BMW M unveils standalone 750hp XM
Discussion
We all know the ICE is not long for this world, but why oh why did they feel the need to 'celebrate' such an awesome series of cars in this utterly inappropriate way? It's actually disgusting, and I am actually sad.
Why not have one last no-holds-barred, full-contact, properly off the hook project that left us all feeling like BMW are even vaguely aware of what M(otorsport) means (or meant).
They had the blueprints years ago - The M1 Homage thing as another poster has said - it was completely glorious.
Here you go BMW, make that M1 Homage with an unhinged V12 (ask Cosworth for help if you need to).
Put some mild hybrid whatever in in if you must, as a nod to the future.
Make 500 Units, sell for £500,000 each (and you will do. Easily) et voila £250,000,000 budget for a project to be proud of.
Sincerely - distraught lifelong BMW fan, current M5 owner and erstwhile owner of at least 6 other M cars and god knows how many other BMWs.
Make this if you must, but for Christ's sake don't call it a celebration of M Division's history.
KHK will be turning in his grave, and may he rest in peace...

In all honesty why would they do a redesign of something like an M1, how would that benefit the company going forward? They already had a go at a relatively exotic rear engined coupe and produced the i8, which I absolutely like, but that is all but phased out so why promote a future that very few seemingly actually want? This car is something I'd never personally want or need but that doesn't detract from the fact that it's more relevant to more of the world market than a sportscar/supercar. But maybe they will get around to producing sportscar as well at some point? How does stuff like this every get to surface, surely someone in the company, let alone the design department could call it out.
If this is for a specific market then it would benefit BMW to declare such, so other markets don't deride it in the way it is being rightly slaughtered here in this UK forum.

Wouldn't that be a better modern day interpretation of the Ultimate Driving Machine?

It's almost as if the opinions on this UK forum are largely an irrelevance in the wider world and BMW don't just don't feel the need to explain themselves to a minority of bods who they aren't aiming it at anyway......If this is for a specific market then it would benefit BMW to declare such, so other markets don't deride it in the way it is being rightly slaughtered here in this UK forum.

Fair point, but if they want a celebration of 50 years of Motorsport inspired engineering, I'm not sure a mobile interpretation of the Atlantic Wall is the best one.

Yeah possibly, I agree with what you are saying, but then I have absolutely no desire for SUV's either so anything other than this would have been more interesting to me personally. It's just not aimed at me that's all.Why not take the RWD carbon fibre electric i3 chassis and make a lightweight two seat sports car?
