It's the Stelvio Pass. Which is actually fairly rubbish as a driving road unless you enjoy a long succession of 10 mph hairpins. The section leading to it from the west is pretty good, though, and the views from the top are spectacular.

Horses for courses. If I had to admit it, my `actual' best car is my diesel estate, everyday driver, But my sports cars, do give me a buzz every time I drive them, and that `buzz' is enabled by me NOT having to drive them every day. if I did do that, I might soon get tired and fed up with them.
I love curries, pie and chips, and Tunnocks tea cakes etc, but if I had to eat them every day, I would likely get so sick and tired of them, I might not even want to smell or see them for a long time, if ever again,
Some billionaires buy paintings worth countless millions, or even more, and all they are is a piece of canvas, with some oil, or albumen based paints spread on them, All they do is hang on a wall somewhere, and get looked at occasionally. But if that is what floats billionaires boats, then why not.
The key to enjoying a car long term is to NOT have to keep using it every day, This is why we still have some wonderful cars from another time, where their owners reserved their use, for high days and holidays!

Think most people on this thread would agree. If I had to drive a McLaren or Pagani to commute I'd get bored of it. I drive my tatty Clio exclusively 'on high days and holidays' and it feels special every time I climb into it.

Would it feel even more special in a McLaren or Pagani? Sure, but rather like BHP you get into rapidly diminishing returns beyond a certain point. Once you're at that point, it's about the occasion not the car.

I think this thread just goes to prove that everyone's different, there's no "right" and people get pleasure from cars in different ways.

I have a few cars. I love driving them all on road and can't ever imagine getting bored of driving. Heck, a local blast from home (close to the M25) can be a truly exhilarating drive

Right tool for the job is what you need. Provided it doesn't break your bank of course...

To some it extent this hinges on peoples differing abilities to have more than one car.
Not one of mine can `really' do well, what the others can do, and vice versa. So as you say it is selecting the best tool for the job.
Where `very' careful thought must be applied, is where `one' car must fulfill all a drivers needs, and in this case, it is quite likely that `one' car is always going to be a compromise in some areas, and also one, (that good though it might be) `might' become everyday boring simply by being used every day.
I also wouldn't fancy the idea of having to use my `pride and joy', to cart furniture, or ship rubbish to the local dump, or park in a supermarket car park, where most dont give a fig about cars, and dinging other peoples doors, or even having to take vomitting prone, or chocolate coated kids to the park in it!.

Yep I get that and all cars are compromises unfortunately. We all have our budgets and parking requirements but I think for sub £15k (is that the average car value these days?) anyone can have a couple of truly fun (used of course) road cars. I have a young family and have 2 old cars which take the kids yet are reliable and I thoroughly enjoy thrashing them hard on road - both are a real joy.

Saying that, neither can take an old wardrobe to the skip (but that's what a rental van is for)..

This happened to me with the E92 M3 when it was my only car. It was a lovely car don't get me wrong, but because I was using it everyday it lost its specialness and it just became the normal for me.

After that experience I always promote having more than one car if funds allow.

I'm much the same.

My last two company cars were an X5 plugin and V90 T8 plugin. Loved the V90, great car, nice not exciting to drive but fast enough. maybe they helped in diminishing my enjoyment, heavy and detached as they were. So I changed jobs and thought I would buy myself something special... I ended up in a 645ci which I've now had for two year, it's on intergalactic miles but I love the jeopardy, the drive is OK and I really don't mind a few car park dings or stone chips.

A bit of track driving now and again is where the driving thrills are. Perhaps an Elise, Caterham or similar is what I need?

What is strangely exciting is the Festival of the Unexceptional Car Show next week. For that I cannot wait! Strange times indeed.

You are about 2000km out........This is Stelvio when we went about 8 years ago, virtually no traffic, but visibility of about 100 yards due to literally been in the clouds smile

We are heading to Trollstigen in Norway, which apparently have roads that make the Swiss alps look mundane......cannot wait!

I stand corrected! Hope it's a better drive than the Stelvio, which does not deserve its (TG inspired) reputation...

Also love a good clean and spending 5 hours on a sunny afternoon cleaning the car makes me very happy.
Would you like help with that? Yes that's the 1 bucket, 1 sponge, and occasionally drop on the ground method smile

I know that method well!!

My 7 year old daughter "helped" me out last week with cleaning the car, part way through I did tell her to be careful not to drop the sponge on the floor as she won't be able to use the sponge if she does. The response I had was, "aaahhhh, I dropped it on the floor earlier, its fine", what can you do lol!!

Maybe it's just part of getting old and realising there is more to life than cars?
redcard

I remember saying to my ex wife that I preferred cars to her(they are much less hassle than women...unless it is a TVR of course!)...however that probably explains why she is now my ex wife though! hehe
Indeed, they do say that a man is not complete until he is married, and once he is married he is `finished'!
An uncle of mine now sadly long gone, really looked after his cars, such that they were as immaculate years after getting them as they were when the rolled out of the showroom, (to the point that many of his friends used to say, when you decide to sell it, give me first refusal!)
When I asked him why he kept them so beautifully, He replied, `Unlike women, If I look after this, it looks after me!

My cousin says that he realised his marriage was over when in an argument his wife accused him of loving his XJS more than her, and he suddenly realised she was right…

Jeezo some of this thread makes for depressing reading, here's a photo from my run this morning - I try to get out for at least a 2 hour run every weekend.

My tastes have changed as I get older, less about speed more about dynamics but a good drive in the morning's got to be better fun than the morning news etc doesn't it?

I've never bought anything genuinely expensive, though I could afford to buy something expensive if I wanted, but I prefer to have the safety net of having some spare cash at the end of every month.

I've had a fair few cars, but I just tool around in this 17 year old MX5. £6k, 200 bhp, 1100 kg, and access to plenty of fine roads here in the North East. It feels fun at the speed limit unlike many cars I've driven.

Cheap cars that you're not precious about and are fun at sensible speeds are definitely the best ownership experience for me. I'm pretty certain spending £50k on a car would not necessarily equal any more fun at the end of the day.

Good man! Same here...was out at 6am both yesterday and today. Thrashed the st out of my cars and left with a hit to last all week.

Plenty of misery on PH - people always have something or someone to blame but themselves.

There are loads of opportunities to enjoy cars, however you like to but you just need to make the effort. And it needn't cost much either.
