It was about time it was put out of its misery. It was what sparked my interest in cars, growing up in the 80s. But over the years, it stopped being about the cars abs just became a bit of a clown show, with cars as props rather than the stars. I stopped watching it years ago.

Sign of times sadly. It was going to happen sooner or later.

Even Pistonheads has become a joke. The slogan "SPEED MATTERS" has been dropped for a snowflake political correct 'Stop dreaming Start driving'
Calling people snowflakes while crying about a slogan makes you look stupid
No-one called people snowflakes and no-one was crying. Being wrong on both points makes you look stupid.

The slogan 'Speed Matters' being dropped from merchandise is an own goal for PH. Most proper car nuts give it only scant attention these days.

If I may, this little bit of historic Clarkson will melt a few snowflakes....

Ah yes, Clarkson. The Nigel Farage of the car world. You don’t actually have to be a meat head to like cars, you know. And you can acknowledge global warming exists and still like cars. The world is a nuanced place.

What a bizarre thread.

Anyway, I think it's a shame. While I was highly sceptical of the idea of the current line-up when it was announced, it did seem to me like they were beginning to gel and the show did have potential. They just needed to be given time. If you watch early episodes of the original three, it wasn't perfect. It took them a little time to figure it out. Sadly, anyone that took on Top Gear after them was doomed, as there would always be unfair comparisons, especially given the fact that the Clarkson, Hammond and May format had become pretty stale towards the end.

As for those advocating a return to "old" Top Gear...just no. It wouldn't work. No one cares. There is more than enough content on YouTube to serve the audience that wants a factual car show. What "new" Top Gear did so well was make cars interesting to a non-car enthusiast audience. It made driving and cars seem interesting, because it played on the emotive and fun side. If you made a show talking about fuel economy, boot space and 0-60 times, no one would watch it.

Right decision from the BBC. Although not an avid fan, I tended to prefer the latest trio to most of the Grant Tour stuff.

I think Chris Harris is brilliant, and was a little disappointed when he moved to Top Gear, it was a great career move but I missed his geeky YouTube car content. I listen to his collecting cars podcast more than I ever watched Top Gear, but I totally respect it was a prime time family entertainment show with a dash of cool car content.

I’m just about old enough to remember watching the original series with my dad. It was the Steve Berry motorcycle section that always peaked my interest.

Can't believe how big a lump Freddie Flintoff is. I know Paddy is tall and quite big but Freddie towers over him in size and build in that picture

No surprises, it's been a shadow of its former self for a long Time and even towards then end of the may, hammond, clarkson era felt rather stale. Now with tvs built in connectivity and easy access to YouTube that's got some well produced, on demand content it feels like the right call.
I’ve watched a few of the post Clarkson, May, Hammond versions of Top Gear and it’s just not my thing. I also agree that with Clarkson and co in the final series it was becoming slightly tiresome. I remember watching them do something on ambulances that was just immature and boring.

A shame but perhaps Top Gear could come back as proper automotive review show like the original idea. YouTube caters for the camaraderie and misbehaviour meaning the BBC get a motoring show without the need to upset the BBC licence payer.

We as punters get the best of both formats.
Not really much point as the number of new cars for enthusiasts dwindles and won't be sold here at all after 2035. Reviewing older cars maybe?

The BBC really know how to get rid of viewers. Time to stop paying the license. There are are lots of good shows elsewhere now.

Sadly with a proliferation of bland EV white goods on the horizon, and the remaining ICE vehicles 'driver assisted' into mediocrity, it was only a matter of time before people loose interest in cars (other than simply as a means to get from A to B) in any case. So the writing was probably on the wall for Top Gear even before the accident.
This. But personally I think the reboots, once clarkson left, were never going to recatcher the enthusiasm for the cars, it became more about the presenters building up to one line jokes or pretty weak slaps stick humour. Cancelling the show reflects how cars are no longer the enthusiast hobby they once were. But just an expensive tool for getting from A to B.

Quite sad to read, but I also feel it's no great loss. It used to be car-based escapades with Clarkson, May and Hammond + The Stig driving exciting cars, then it became whatever it was trying to be with Chris Evans (I suppose that was a credible TV personality plus a credible motoring journalist with Chris Harris)... that was awful. I think the most recent iteration has been utter tripe. Chris Harris is good, but they've tried to make the other two into serious car reviewers and it was bound to end in disaster. Watching Freddie Flintoff constantly acting like a 13 year-old at a school camp was cringeworthy and it looks like he suffered absolutely horrific injuries trying to play a role he wasn't fit for.

The Top Gear channel on YouTube with Ollie Marriage & Co is more noteworthy than the BBC Top Gear. Goodbye BBC Top Gear and, in all honesty, good riddance.

Got a notification on my phone about this and made a rare visit to the BBC News site to read the article.
Photo of FF seems to show pretty clearly that he suffered serious (at least) facial injuries. I had no idea it was so bad....

£9M settlement though? - I guess they'll be launching even more investigations into me now, with that to recoup from somewhere other than licence fee income...
Seems fair enough given his earning levels plus it was a private production company and it will come from liability insurance so no harm done to your tv licence

I agree - and Harris would be the ideal chap to front a re-birthed show with a proper focus on the cars and not fking about.
I personally thought he was (is) very impressive, and an absolute natural on camera...
Yes, this.

Sure Top Gear and the Grand Tour were a bit scripted and a little tired towards the end, but the camaraderie, japes and interactions of Clarkson. May and Hammond were still fun. I still watch some of the older episodes on Amazon Prime.

But I think the intransigence of the Beeb has driven most of us to YouTube channels. It's almost as though they were being uber woke and thinking a motoring programme or channel wasn't at one with their kumbaya and environmental views. I'm now thinking, what about an EV programme?

Only thing I watched on BBC were TG and snooker (old man alert!!) and gave up my TV licence after watching a few of the Evan’s era of TG. Grand Tour just blew it out of the water.

Fortunately snooker coverage is available elsewhere!!

I doubt it will be back, the trouble is that things have moved on now, the latest cars get reviewed on Youtube the day they are released on TG they are about 6 months later.

They have a Youtube channel why not do a weekly show on that, latest car new and reviews etc.

I read this morning that May says the show had run it's course and yet he happily continues in the same theme on Amazon.....

I tried a few of the Grand Tours, but it's like watching my Dad dance.

No great loss. I couldn't watch "no likey no lighty" pretending to know about cars. And Harris got on my nerves.

There's plenty of good motoring content on Youtube now anyway.

Hasn't this been announced about 6 times in the last year?

Some of the stunts were getting pretty risky. But I guess they thought that's what people wanted to see.

I'd have just preferred them reviewing cars, as isn't that what Top Gear is supposed to be?

Hopefully CH will end up somewhere on Youtube. I know he does CC, but the reviews are few and far between.

Now wouldn't a show with say Chris Harris, Rory Read, and Henry Catchpole be excellent viewing for people who just want car reviews without scripted challenges.

To carry on with the show, or god forbid, to tailor it to suit car nuts would be to acknowledge the existence and enthusiasms of petrolheads everywhere though and thats not really in keeping with 'the new order of things'. Is it ?
Helping to suppress interest in vroom-vroom while reducing personal enjoyment is part of the New Way.
And, as usual the BBC are spearheading that message.

Right here at PH theres more than enough content, and contributors, to make a car show that could be watched by millions.
Make it about real people enjoying their toys, a classic and restoration section, motorsport and the obligatory bling and you have a show.
Channel Four are you listening ?
Or, just keep on keeping on spoon-feeding the masses on 'SAS - Who Dares Dancing On Ice in the Jungle While Avoiding the Baillifs'
