Wife wants a new car... we are now in day 3 of arguing!!
Discussion
You are in the same situation as us, and we do fine with both a 5 series saloon and a Ford Focus hatch.
The 5 fits a full baby seat and a booster and no seat, as does the focus.
However, if I was looking for a main car, my shortlist would be as follows:
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010...
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010... Slightly over budget but price should drop after winter
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010...
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010... - Absolute bargain. My favourite. Spend the change on some winter tyres.
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2010... because I never quite grew out of my Tonka truck.

If your wife wants a £13k prestige low-mileage large car for 2,000 miles a year then that's quite as much a toy as any Defender or Elise, just for a different purpose. You want something to enjoy driving, she wants something to enjoy wearing (and being seen wearing). Up to your family finances whether this is a good idea or not, but I'd definitely be reviewing the depreciation charts to demonstrate the running cost of one of them in terms of her main interest - say if the car would depreciate at a cost of 1 new fancy outfit every 6 weeks, or whatever.
Have to say I don't really get the point of all the "Let's tell the chap it's not worth spending £13k on a second car" posts.
I'm sure that not all of us drive the cheapest possible car that will get us from A to B, and I'm sure all of us own some possessions that we can't justify based on cost, we own them because we like them, and because we're fortunate that we can.

Is it just the agricultural driving experience she doesn't like about the defender? If so what about a G-wagon? Very comfy, very nice to drive, but a proper hardcore offroader. Won't be that new in budget but hewn from granite reliability and will also hold it's value extremely well.

Pretty simple: seven seater 4x4. Q7, XC90, Disco3, X5. Maybe a Japanese equivalent. Trick is to find a low mileage one for that money.
Why low mileage? If the OP will only add 2k pa a cheaper, higher mileage car (with history) bought now could become a low-mileage one after a few years ownership, making more financial sense to mepaddyhasneeds said:

Bet there's a thread on Mumsnet about how frivolous a husband is for wanting to spend 30k on an Exige that he'll do 4k a year in and how unreasonable it is not to buy a nice diesel hatchback instead... I'm sure that not all of us drive the cheapest possible car that will get us from A to B, and I'm sure all of us own some possessions that we can't justify based on cost, we own them because we like them, and because we're fortunate that we can.
I'd have thought a well depreciated premium car at a good price because of high mileage for the year would be the best way to minimise depreciation (definitely not a sodding nearly new Kia, FFS).

True. But the buying criteria for my last purchase was "I want a T350" so I had very little room to move on cost. As she doesn't seem to care what it is, surely there is a fair bit of scope.OP, point out that some of the change can go on new shoes and watch her change her mind...

Have you considered a cayenne ?. I know you won't get a low mileage one for your money, but when doing 2k a year does it matter really?. You could get a cayenne with under 100k miles for less than 13k
I am certainly coming around to considering something with a slightly higher mileage that has depreciated. To be honest, that was one of the reasons why I was looking at a 110 Defender in the first place as they seem to be pretty much depreciation proof. There are some interesting comments that have been posted regarding the Disco 2 - having seen one today (and pointed out half a dozen 'issues' to the vendor) I am beginning to see why why don't tend to get such a good write up. Shame really as I quite like the look of them.
At the moment, the shortlist is looking like:
XC90 (which apparantly comes with a free shag)
VW Tourag (or however you spell it)
A6 Quattro Estate (nice big car; although no 7 seats)
Range Rover (ditto)
I need to have a look at the Subaru Outback and Legacy though too as these appear to have got quite a few votes from you Piston Headers!!
Thanks for the help guys and gals - it is much appreciated
p.s. and has put an end to boring / arguing with the OH!!!

Grow up little boy.
Perhaps they can afford it?
You pompous ahole! If you extracted that fat head from your arse maybe we could all see the sun.Perhaps they can afford it?
Pointing out that the OP's buying criteria aren't all that sensible is constructive advice.

IIRC, you started this little spat by telling me I was being "Billy Big bks" or whatever derision you decided to use. All I was asking you to do was grow up a little for a completely OTT response when I posted a perfectly reasonable response in the first instance. I don't see what I posted initially to offend you so badly, but I'm more than happy to take this offline so as not to move the OP too far off topic.

All I was saying is that choosing to spend £13k on a 2nd car that will be used isn't something to get all up in arms about.
Then please forgive me for misunderstanding you. My own view seems to be the same as others- if she doesn't want something specific the budget need not be a target.Spat not required, though feel free to email me some abuse. I could do with a giggle.

Well, probably for me. All the best for the new year. And, OP, sort it out! You don't need to spend your entire budget just for the sake of it. Have a good look at the Forester. You could get one for £5k, get it nicely polished, and a new set of shoes for the missus, and still have a load of change!

If I am, the OP must be too as it was a specific car he'd already seen and considered.
Spending any kind of money on a Disco 2 is totally nuts.Edited by ChrisRS on Sunday 2nd January 20:11
