Nostalgia.....what did petrol cost when you first bought it?
Discussion
$1.25 - I bought my first car a 1989 mustang 5.0 and everyone was all "oooh the gas is going to kill you!"
HA!! Jokes on them.!!!
I'm pretty sure it was actually a few cents less than that but this is the first memory of such. But I also think that was for regular and I put medium grade which may have been closer to $1.50

I remember 50p a litre and putting in £5 or £10 in my Metro, never more than £10. Though was interesting when I moved to Jersey in 2000, the price there was 50p a litre again, and they have no road tax. Guernsey was abour 55p a litre when I moved there in 2006. It went up 20% in when they got rid of road tax at the start of 2008. Yes you heard correctly, they abolished road tax in 2008! Before that your road tax was calculated on the weight of your car.

Sorry guys - I found a little notebook I used at one time when I was a student, and in the back, I found a record of petrol use a liitle bit later, probably late 70's early 80s - and it was 32.5p per gallon (yes GALLON!).
You're either lying about your age or you weren't in England. Petrol was 33-35p per gallon when I passed my test in May 1973, in the summer or Autumn of that year there was a war in the middle east and we nearly ended up with petrol rationing, I still have the ration books that were issued, when supplies started flowing again it went up to about 50p per gallon by the end of the year and it never went down again. You're also right that I wasn't in England either.
Started work at Loxhams garage Ulverston, Lancs,(now Cumbria)in 1964 and worked the pumps occasionly. There was premium, super & super+and it was 4/6 4/8 & 4/10 a gallon (4.5litres, this equates to just under 25pence in todays money. The mechanics wage was around £15 a week then so you could buy 60 gallons or 270ish litres with a weeks wages.
Had a Suzuki TS90 in the late seventies - took about gallon to fill it up, around 75p.
I took it over to Norway one summer for three months - and when I got back it could take a pound of petrol to fill it. (and only do 55mpg).
I bought a Rover 418 (still got in fact) when I moved to NZ in 2000. There's no road tax on diesel here (but there are Road user charges based on weight) - and sometimes diesel would be on special at 49c a litre, which at the time worked out at 16p (including VAT!). I could fill the car for eight quid - and do 500 miles.
Now it's $1.42 a litre, about 68p
