After 22,000 miles or so in the last 7 months I need to retire the A6 from the fleet and replace it with a large estate. The high miles are likely to continue for a while, so long distance comfort is high on the requirements list. I don't really have a clue what to go for, nothing is really jumping out at me.
I quite fancy a full fat Range Rover but bork potential and overall running costs put me off (plus they aren't quite in budget for this thread yet). Suggestions welcome.

£4,999 - Jaguar XJ 2.7 TDVi Sovereign

I think someone up above doesn't want me to attend this week's meeting. First the s124 is significantly delayed, then today the clutch of my substitute car (993) has expired.
Still coming though, and in a barge, but its an e250d hire car
I have been hassling the garagistes.Still coming though, and in a barge, but its an e250d hire car

Do they accrue no claims discount though? I didn't think classic policies did?
At £129 a year, who cares?!You do need to have another car on an ordinary policy, though, which may be an oblique way of answering the question and satisfying the concern about losing NCD.

Ach Harry, you tease. I was looking forward to a run down from Cairnryan in a 993. Sorry to hear about your clutch, you must be pi$$ed off that neither the porker or 124 can make it. Still coming though, and in a barge, but its an e250d hire car
Looking forward to it anyway, see you bright & early on Sunday.
I won't be able to attend on Sunday, so best wishes for a good day to all who make it. Mrs Stegel politely declined the offer of an overnight stay in the lakes, while pointing at a number of things considered (in all fairness correctly) higher priority, but hopefully I'll make the next one.

A left field but wise choice, barring an issue with the front suspension, which had adjustment bolts rusting solid IIRC, that looks a great buy, comfortable, disposable driving.
Is it adjustment bolts? Common issue on all VAG cars of that period is the long bolt that goes through the two top suspension arms and the upright bent. Used to see a few broken uprights where the lug the bolt passed through was broken.
CL600 now on auction with a reserve of £4k. Claimed to have had some recent work but not all it needs by the sound of it... wonder why it hasn't been MOT'd?

I agree with a lot of what is said, i've had quite a few E39's over the years, all very good cars. I've never had a W124 but I wonder if the E39 is the 'new' W124?

No pictures yet, but this sounds like a top barge. I've always thought this garage is probably OK, too.
