Another oft forgotten Italian tax rule car was the E30 320is. The 320i the rest of the world got had the in line 6 M20 producing about 125bhp, but the 320iS, for Italy and Portugal only, had a 2.0 Motorsport 4 cyl, essentially a short stroke S14 M3 engine, producing around 190 bhp. It also had lsd, dog leg gearbox, oil temp guage instead of the econometer, sports suspension (all similar to the M3) and the standard E30 Sport body. Rarely come up for sale these days.

On the subject of over-engined small coupes, how about the BiMotor Scirocco mk 2 which is over engined inasmuch as it has 2! 2 x 1.8 4cyl motors pushing out 360 bhp, 4wd.

VW built the prototype as a Group B study.

I recall a few Dimma 205/306 convertibles that looked seriously cool..

..but then there was the Nova Saloon Convertible, the Cavalier Convertible (slightly better).

I maintain that the Peugeot 306 Cabrio is still the best looking mass production convertible ever made, supercars/exotica aside. Looks great with hood up or down.

A chap called Kim Mather rallied a twin-engined Scirocco in the North West around 1986/87. Did very well till the MSA banned it!

It is strange the way a saloon version was essential fpr a long time if a car was to sell well in the UK. VW Derby and Jetta/Ventnor, Vauxhall Belmont, Ford Orion and booted Focus, Monday etc.
