The Cobra was the original car to be nicknamed "The Widow-maker".
Plenty of 'bikes had had the nickname before though.
The term probably started with some half-arsed, over-engined, almost-unflyable aircraft didn't int?Plenty of 'bikes had had the nickname before though.
SS7
Hope Bean and F1 both recover well.

"The Martin B-26 Marauder was a World War II twin-engine medium bomber built by the Glenn L. Martin Company. ........ After entering service with the U.S. Army, the aircraft received the reputation of a "Widowmaker " due to the early models' high rate of accidents during takeoff and landings."

Prior to that I think it was used for some of the '30s racing aircraft like the Gee bee and Hughes which were all engine and no manners.
Glad Rowan is OK, and the car doesn't look to bad, was a bit worried initially as there are two F1s in Northants and I wasn't sure which one it was when it was first reported
Firstly, I hope Rowan is OK and his F1 will be back on the road soon. He's a very experienced driver and racer so although this may have 'rattled' him, I'm sure he'll get over it as we all do after an 'off'...
But it would be nice to establish some facts because as usual, the media do the best they can to sensationalise anything involving a celebrity, especially if a nice car is involved.
Here's how I see it right now:
Car spun several times - not verified
Car hit a tree - not verified
Car hit a lamp post - not verified (seems like it may have come to rest against a traffic sign)
Car caught fire - not verified, might have been steam
"Left hand door had been cut away" - looks like it's just open, going by the photo
Rowan broke his shoulder - seems like he didn't
"Rowan cheats death" - perhaps a little overstated
Every story like this seems to suffer from sensationalist reporting, exaggeration, poor research, factually incorrect observations, unsubstantiated statements from "witnesses" or "onlookers" and pure speculation until a few days, weeks or years later the truth finally emerges but by that time nobody is interested or cares.
Such is the state of 'news reporting' these days

Sad isn't it... it's no longer news, it's little more than over-hyped fantasy dreampt up by a coffee fuelled city dwellers under pressure to bash out a story without giving any consideration to the genuine facts, or it seems compassion to those involved.FaineantFreddy said:

Tabloids go on anything and this is exacerbated by the fact that they use Twitter as a news source now days. But it would be nice to establish some facts because as usual, the media do the best they can to sensationalise anything involving a celebrity, especially if a nice car is involved.

Twitter moves fast, but there is no way to make sure what you are reading is true. The amount of crap that was being spewed on Twitter after the crash was amazing and all that 'information' was used to write the articles. Twitter is just making sensationalisation much worse.
