2) those figures might be based on reg years which is typically august to august, so you might be comparing 12 months with 4 months (and therefore it represents an increase)
Well unfortunatly it wasn't my choice, it's the way the SMMT work, but in reality it makes sod all difference where your 12 month period starts and ends, as long as you do the same every year.

[
August 2010 to August 2011 = 12 months = 43.8 a month. August 2011 to November 2011 (which is implied what your statistic possibly means) = possibly around 80 a month.

Anyway, just having a pop at statistics being meaningless, rather than your underlying point. I don't suspect this guy doing his thing is leading to instant jumps in sales either, but I do suspect a clever idea lies somewhere and hopefully the groundworks are being put in place so the new cars hit the ground running and don't suffer the same prejudices the Evora did ("I could buy a Porsche for that" - "Yes, but why would you want to, the Lotus is better to drive!" etc etc)

I'm sure this'll make no sense to most of the UK beard tugging Lotus stalwarts.

Swizz Beats is Mr. Alicia Keys, and as a producer has worked with Jay-Z, Beyonce and many others. He's a bit of a hot thing with US media, and has tie-ins with Reebok, as a painter (donating profits to Cystic Fibrosis and Cancer charities), won a Grammy and been nominated for a couple more.

Most significant is that the GTE is getting big launches in China and the US. The US market in particular seems pretty ambivalent to the standard Lotus range - nimble cars aren't important, and big block US cars can usually out-drag them at a fraction of the cost.

So, I can understand this launch. It's targeting America with a car that has serious performance and with an aspirational tie-in. It'll make no sense whatsoever to the UK. Whether the US market will notice is another thing entirely.

After the rubbish trend for matt black cars, I quite like the Chrome red. The GTE really works for me too. To be honest I don't know what the rest of you lot want from Lotus (apart from apparently hoping they'll curl up and die). One particular marketing campaign doesn't define the company, and anything they can do to get out of their core market (who are full of opinions but, it seems shallow in the pocket department) is a good thing.
Awesome post.

Why don't Lotus just do what everyone else did and churn out a hideous but powerful and somewhat ostentatious SUV. Give that tacky chrome paint and some "twenny" fours. It will sell like fking hot cakes.

What yank is going to buy a poncy little British roller skate like that? They wouldn't even fit in one.

6 pages of responses already which shows how controversial this has been.

PH is a sophisticated, well informed and wise audience that know a lot about Lotus and its history. Which is why most of us feel really uncomfortable about that video. I couldn't watch all of it.

From a business point of view this firm will fail unless this rebrand and relaunch works. It is a very very high risk strategy. If they cannot sell more cars in 2012 & 2013 then we enthusiasts will not have Lotus cars to buy in the future, which is sad.

Like a few other PHers I think Colin Chapman is rolling in his grave. At least with all the F1 furore over the last couple of years people have been attaching the name to going around in circles quickly. This is so cringe worthy and un-British that I cannot make sense of it. I really want to buy a Lotus one day like my father and grandfather before me but I am really averse to heavy depreciation, mediocre build quality, ordinary engines, and the Evora's looks. Hopefully soon the new cars will get all the important things right. If a company makes really good products and continually improves them it stands a better chance of success.

Just a quick thought, 50 cent owns a Ferrari Enzo and has had it, and other supercars in his videos, does this put anyone here off owning one? No? So why would this put you off the GTE Evora?

I'm all for Lotus doing everything they can to stay in business here - I don't like it but hopefully there will be many who do.

I can see why those with a long history with Lotus would be squeamish though - it would be like catching your Gran listening to NWA.. <shudder>

Did Ferrari try to associate it's self with 50 cent? Can you find anyone who bought a Ferrari because 50 cent has one?

There's a big difference - 50 cent owning an Enzo and using it and other cars in his videos by his choice is one thing; Ferrari employing 50 cent as a creative director, swiping aside their history, sticking two fingers up to those who've traditionally been Ferrari buyers, and selling their cars on the back of 50 cent's music connections to a whole new market that may or may not exist would be a little more galling. But that's what Lotus are doing.

I couldn't watch the video either. It saddens me greatly to see what's happening to the Lotus name, be it court squabbles over F1 naming rights, or this Swizz Beatz connection.

First that hideous Freddie Mercury special, now this? Who the hell are "Swizz Beatz" and why should I care? Who thought that wing actually looked good? It looks like a Ripspeed special.

read the thread. someone below knows who he is and what he is in the US and confirms he isn't supposed to mean anything to Brits, so Lotus don't want you to care. So as you were, and hopefully they'll sell more cars in the US and stay alive so there are still around when you want to buy one. Beats them making a foul off-roader which many manufacturers have decided to do instead. Not sure why people are getting so offended really.
