RE: New Audi RS4: revealed

Lets be honest, the B7 RS4 was a bit of a freak machine that somehow slipped through Audi's 'borification' machine unscathed and escaped into the wild before anyone at Audi noticed. Even the R8, while it's an interesting and fun car, is a bit boring when compared to other mid-engined rivals. The B7 RS4, was interesting and fun even when compared to direct rivals, which is very rare and unique for an Audi since maybe the RS2. Now that the modern Audi yuppie types and ram raiders have inevitably moved onto the latest Audi offerings, a B7 RS4 has become one of those cars where you know the driver is someone who really knows about cars and appreciates a fine machine.
I own a B7 RS4 because i got fed up with having to choose between the wife and the dog and getting earache for leaving her at home. Not a bad switch though when you think of the practicality benefits.
I don't think the B7 will get too hurt financially by the latest offering.

Do you know of any decent video clip links of either of those upgrades in the flesh? I guess Youtube...

Praise the lord, the normally aspirated engine lives on

Isn't the torque (317lbs ft) a little underwhelming
for something likely to weigh over 1800 Kg.with the kind of performance a (relatively) simple re-calibration of the V6 is capable of, Audi must really think that the V8 badge is mandatory.

much as I love the V8, they really should consider that the current S4 supercharged V6 has more torque and at much lower RPM, so whist the V8 with 450Hp will ultimately be faster, I suspect that in everyday use the V6 is going to easily match it.

its something of a marketing dilemma for audi, the first cars where blown i5 (quattro, rally cars, RS2) then the B5 was a blown V6 and the last 2 V8swith the kind of performance a (relatively) simple re-calibration of the V6 is capable of, Audi must really think that the V8 badge is mandatory.
personally I prefer the TTRS engine as its spiritually closer to the genesis of quattro and sounds very similiar, but i am a nerd

I guess, but the TTRs engine is already pretty stretched, it could not make 450+hp (as on OEM product).personally I prefer the TTRS engine as its spiritually closer to the genesis of quattro and sounds very similiar, but i am a nerd
the V6 could, and would also end up with a lighter package with lower emissions (yes I know).
without going with forced induction, the V8 is pretty much at the limits at 450hp.

TTRS and S4 engine both would have needed some development, the V8 can be raided straight from the parts bin, which is very unlike audi
disagree...the current V6 could easily make the 450Hp mark without major work, it already makes more torque, so to make the (extra) HP it only needs to breath better up the rev range (as opposed to what it does now ie. bleeding off boost at higher RPM)

Yup. Plus the lower weight and lower emissions wouldn't hurt it.the current V6 could easily make the 450Hp mark without major work, it already makes more torque, so to make the (extra) HP it only needs to breath better up the rev range (as opposed to what it does now ie. bleeding off boost at higher RPM)
Looks a bit underwhelming IMO

that's all done on the V8
I personally would have preferred a blown V6

PITA to get the smears off thou, old school RS rims?Worst I ever had were the BM multispoke jobs... a real PITA. Current B8 (5 spoke) rims are fine to clean but show their age badly after only a few months.
As you were.

I have a B7 RS4. It's interesting the different views of new/old RS4s. I know I'm biased, but I really can't think of a car on the market today that is as good as the RS4 and just hope that the new one is as good as the old one.
It looks undertstated, meaning I can park it in most places and I don't get any unwanted attention which I used to get in my old 911 / M3 - the downside is that people don't appreciate how quickly you can move/are moving when they pull out etc.
It would be a shame if the new model doesn't come with a manual - the one on the B7 is a peach and just as good as one you get on a Porsche 996/997 and makes the M3s stick feel agricultural in comparsion.
The way this car puts down the power in any condition is simply staggering. The M-differential seemed back-ward - too much power and not enough weight so you get the back end wagging. The RS4 just gets on with it with huge amounts of grip and no wagging and around corners too. You might not be able to get the back end to swing out as much as the M3/911, but in the real work you want grip rather than powerslides - I'm now a convert.
Lastly the power and poise is excellent - it is on par with the best cars out there.
Couple all this to the practically of the car (which you don't notice when your pushing on) it is a great package. It's not a supercar just a super car and I'm still smitten with mine.

I like the look of this new model but hope it drives more like the B7 RS4 than the RS5!
Doesn't seem to move the game on much, though.

And i really wish alfa did a 159gta/cloverleaf sportwagon.
And what are BMW thinking with no M3 touring. Really, when will they get it?
And they should all be called estates.
in fairness to BMW, loads of people on here moaning there was no E39 M5 estate. BMW make an M5 estate and sell fk all.S4 Avant- Insignia VXR sportwagon

i believe the tourings have different suspension set up so the cost to re-engineer a new suspension set up, new body panels, change all the tooling at their facilities to make a touring would most likely cost far, far more than they'd ever make through sales.
don't you think?
