RE: PH Carpool: Range Rover Evoque SD4
Discussion
I think it looks great and I love the alloys and the colour of your car, different from the usual black and white ones I'vee seen. All the reviews and the vids I have seen on this car are positive, and its good to see JLR doing excellent.
It might be expensive to some and others might see it as a fashion item, who cares? If the guy can afford it, then it's all good, becuase it is his money at the end of the day![smile](/inc/images/smile.gif)

I actually like the idea of the Evoque and I don't doubt it is an excellent thing.
I'm not sure about the tiny rear windows though. Followed on the M4 the other day. Can't imagine it is much fun inside a black one with such little glass to see out of.
Think I would prefer the new Toureg.

it seams this is a real marmite car
Never a truer word spoken. I'm just not sure why people hate it so much. Looks are subjective, so it's fair to say some should like it and some shouldn't. But then there's the RR beardies, who moan about brand devaluation? The people who haven't actually driven it who complain it's a style over substance car (who incidentally don't like the styling) and then the people who complain about cost when they won't ever buy one anyway! Strange! Even if you don't like the car for whatever reason, surely you have to like the fact that it's a huge success for JLR and has led to the creation of 1500 jobs in the UK? Or is that also unpalatable for some reason?

I may hate the X6 and the X6M especially but thats more because of the w
ker owners that drive it more than anything - the WAGs, and footballer/banker types who don't know anything about cars, or the history of BMW Motorsports and don't care to. [which admittedly is their business and none of mine]. But if say, Stirling Moss bought an X6M because he just liked it, I suspect it wouldn't really lower my opinion of him at all.
This Cox bloke is a petrolhead, a proper PHer and bought something that some feel is in poor taste, or for the wrong reasons. Perhaps it is, but he's one of us so let him alone i say
And personally, I absolutely love the RR Evoque. I'd like my next car to be a 2 seat sports car but alternately id love an Evoque. And if I'm honest, its actually the Lotus Exige or Cayman R im considering that would be the poseur's choice because all it'll likely ever do is just sit in traffic on the way to work everyday, and the RR is infinitely better at that task than any sports car.
Only seen a few in Canada though, with the last one I saw being at a petrol station with a hipster type with skinny jeans and big specs driving a black 3-dr. His last car was the VW Tiguan so he was mega happy with the RR.

Remember when the original Audi TT went on sale? People were falling over themselves to buy it despite the fact that it was very average to drive given its intended purpose.
I think the same is happening with the Evoque.
Regardless of what it is actually like to drive (rather good i understand) it will sell on looks alone and that's no bad thing.
I have driven a MK1 TT 225 and it was good enough, not great but good enough and i love the styling.
The same goes with the Evoque, i love the styling now it's out on the road despite being dubious initially.
It doesn't really matter WHY it sells as long as it sells. It's good to see some great LR and Jag products at the moment.

I agree. This car has sold to many people on looks alone but it still has substance. If it was utterly sI think the same is happening with the Evoque.

Good review and I generally agree.
I have an Evoque Si4 Dynamic Lux and my wife owns a Mini Cooper S.
The Evoque has 240bhp and gets to 60mph in 7.1 sec in auto form - not far away from the Mini on paper.
I've driven both extensively and can say that the Evoque in Sport mode, in Dynamic (adjusts the magna ride suspension and steering for a more responsive ride) and using the paddle shifters is remarkably similar through favourite B road 'S' bends. It really is surprisingly brisk and handles very well indeed for a car of its size and weight.
I'd still say the Cooper S has the cornering edge but not hugely. The Evoque really does feel like a mild hot hatch which is great for a SUV that can off-road as well as the Freelander 2.
I've owned several fast BMW's - Z4M, 335i (360bhp chipped) etc and while they are significantly faster, the Evoque has proven that it too can be fun when driven spiritedly.
Coming most recently from the much larger and very versatile but boring to drive Discovery 4, I wanted a car that was enjoyable to drive on both tarmac and off-road in mud and snow while still being able to accommodate my two teenagers in the back for trips to France and Belgium etc. The RRE has done a Belgium trip and my 6'1" 14 yr old son sat in the back of my Coupe and said it was very comfortable with plenty of legroom - more than the RRS as far as I recall!
All said, the RRE is a surprise package - large enough inside, very comfortable with a great spec (my car has dual screen TV, Panoramic glass roof, electronic opening/closing boot, DAB radio, SatNav, 825W Meridian sound, surround camera system, adaptive dynamics, xenons etc) and can even lay claim to being 'sporty'. In terms of rear view - excellent, better than any BMW I've owned...why? Because it just isn't nearly as bad as many perceive it to be anyway but with the reverse camera automatically engaged I can park it within 50mm of the rear wall of my garage with no problems at all.
I test drove the RRE before I purchased one since it had to perform well on the road for me to take the plunge and it does. It also deals with snow brilliantly - as good as my D4 did .
I will say that for long haul trips the boot while perfectly fine for most trips (including taking the Labrador out) is not large enough for a family of 4 and the kitchen sink...but this is very easily resolved with a roof box / roof basket. I opted for the roof basket with two large waterproof off-roading bags and found we had more than enough storage; one bag hardly used. So even carrying capacity is not an issue.
Criticisms? I said the car is a 'sporty' SUV and it is but the engine and gearbox could still be better...fuel economy for the petrol is poor; 23 mpg over 2168 mostly urban miles so far. BMW make superior engines. No question. The gearbox is fine but unless you use the Sport mode, can feel quite sluggish at times. But as an overall package, the RRE is a very good car.

From sitting in a few of them, I'd say the glass roof is essential.
No it is not if you are above average height... I test drove one with seats all the way down and I was rubbing my head on the ceiling.... Glass roofs are cool but will steal about 3 to 4 cms of head space... I am 183cm height...Cool car... Congrats... I like the color

I have the Coupe...my 186cm tall son (6 foot 1 inch) has plenty of room above his head in the back seat. The panoramic glass roof actually adds to the head room in the Evoque. Cool car... Congrats... I like the color
Tallest person I've driven in the car is 195cm and he too wasn't touching the roof lining!
Problem with a tall driver is that rear legroom will be massively compromised, as it's very limited as it is. The boot is tiny and shallow due to the 4wd stuff (even on 2wd versions) so all in all it's smaller than a Golf inside.
We looked at it but bought a better equipped and crucially much bigger Nissan Qashqai+2 for almost half the price (with a big broker discount that may help towards worse residuals in % terms). I think the Evoque is good looking but we don't care about image enough to want something that looks so ostentatiously middle-class...
I don't see how it could do any more than very light off-roading with those all weather tyres, not that it's an issue as none will ever see any off-roading anyway. I doubt the car would survive the experience.
Still, it's built in the UK which is great news.
The main reason why it looks so much like the concept is that the concept was not a concept, it was a tooled up production car with fake concept bits, that trick started with the TT Mk1, which again was never a concept in the true sense of the term.
