I think people are being very harsh against the looks of this new car and after a bit of amateur photo-shopping (based on the camouflaged pix) I think that this car will be very, very good looking. Let’s wait and see.
The car has already been unveiled, as posted earlier in this thread.http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/autoexpressnews/...

Now I'm a great fan of Renaultsport but I'd hardly describe that as droolworthy. Really great car, not a work of art. FWIW I much prefer the pics of the new car above
Quite. Never looked at mine and thought it looked very pretty. Purposeful maybe and prefer the 172/182 range of wheels to the newer fussier stuff. Saw a new Megane 265 in black with black wheels parked up and thought that looked brilliant.New one looks fine and I don't know about other Renaultsport owners but I certainly didn't buy mine for the looks or the number of doors. I bought it for the engine and roller skate handling. Presume the new one will have the handling nailed but I'd miss the screaming 2.0 engine. Not driven many new turbos so I'd like to feel how it compares though.
And I don't like only having three doors. Fine if you only have the missus or only one mate or no big stuff to ever move about (which to me is the whole point of a hot hatch - it should do everything) but otherwise it's just annoying.

Is this the way manufacturers are going?
The new Focus ST will only be offered as a 5 door variant
And an Estate, did you not go to the Festival of Speed? It was tearing up the hill with a hatchback ST and a Jaguar XFR in a 'The Sweeney' promo thingy. Didn't look that exciting but I bet it will sell like hot cakes. I'd happily have one for the daily car.The new Focus ST will only be offered as a 5 door variant
I prefer the look of three door cars and have never owned a five door performance car but I've always had something else as a practical car. A five door RS Clio would tick all the boxes if you have a small family, an Estate ST if you have a larger one.

Good photoshop, but it's still a bit of a gawdy design. It has those silly quarter-light windows immediately by the wingmirror, which I first encountered on a new shape Astra. You don't benefit from seing anything extra through them, so the only benefit they serve is possibly to that of a car theif with particularly long arms. Or maybe the OBD port is immediately behind that glass (!).
Point I was making is that it will never look 'as good' as the cars which went before it. Purely subjective, opinionated, as expected of a PHer...
I totally agree with you on that point. This when I see this type of thing on a car its usually a MPV. Point I was making is that it will never look 'as good' as the cars which went before it. Purely subjective, opinionated, as expected of a PHer...
I have owned the last three versions of clio and I think they have been getting more and more ulgy. Most mornings I walk out to my car and think to myself 'Renault what were you thinking?' but then I get in and drive it and I feel better again. I think this time Renault have used the love child of an alfa mito and and a VW polo to create a far better looking car than the current one and hopefully they have setup up the chassis and suspension as good as they know how too. Should be be a great car.... IMO.

Well, that was predictable. Even covering it in Page-3 vinyl wrap couldn't hide the fact that it was going to be a generic, jelly-mould eyesore.
This is infinitely more drool-worthy-

One quick point, no one seems to have mentioned the steering, I suspect this may have electric assistance! : eek:
Over the years I've come very close to buying. Renault Sport Clio, but every time something put me off.
172/182 - terrible driving position.
197 - felt slow, top gear too high for cruising, though I think they revised it later.
200 - guppy looks
The new one could be the perfect family hot hatch especially sincere Mk5 Golf became stupidly expensive.
IMO a modern turbo suits a hot hatch so much better for day to day driving, I had 2 Mk5 Golf GTIs a 3dr and a 5dr, and yes the 3dr looked smarter, but when you are inside driving the tits off it, you really don't notice the difference apart from when you have to get out in the pissing rain to let the back seat passengers in! If you want 3 doors buy a coupe....

I think it looks fine, how it drives is the important bit. I have a 172 Cup track car and it's one of the most entertaining things I've owned even if it's not that fast (on track is another story).
Turbo is also a good thing imo, improved economy for when you're not thrashing it to death and then much more tuneable when you want to modify it. My Cup averages 41mpg on a run and still manages 25mpg when hooning round a track.

cracking car for the money.
better than pretty much every competitor in the price range imo.
in the spy shots, i thought "arrrrrgh"
but having the seen the photoshopped stuff......hmmm yes please.
more than happy with the turbo too. means there will be some very quick little clio's about.
in fact, just thinking about it, my last 10 cars or so, the two clios have been the only NA power plants.

Think it's more a case of more people want a 5-door these days, and once they focus-grouped current or potential 3-door owners, most of them said they'd still buy a 5-door if the 3-door wasn't available, especially if the two extra doors are hidden as they are.Emeye said:
More important than the looks and the number of door, no one has answered my question - Is this going to have hydraulic or electric power steering?!?
It'll have power steering. Why the concern? Electric assistance on the column actually gives you more options (proper speed sensitive assistance for example).

Doesn't the current Clio already have electric power steering? I would be very suprised if the new generation Clio would revert back to/stay with hydraulic power steering.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
