As for my thoughts. Wouldn't touch a Renault. If they were the last drivers cars on earth, I would give up my hobby. They should rename them "Renault Sport Money Pit" quite honestly.
I checked your garage (amazingly similar car history to me) and had to laugh that you owned a 350Z, basically already a Renault.Previously a huge Jap car fan, I now have an RS 200 Clio and must say the last few years have seen a lot of improvement in build quality and reliability. Let's hope the new CTR is a good one

I do find the current upward trend of the list price concerning. Only 10 years ago I bought my Type R. Sub £20k all seemed like reasonable value. A whisker from £30k just doesn't seem like good value to me.
I coudn't agree more. I bought a top of the range, brand new ST3 (5dr) in Sept 2006 (When they were like Rocking Horse S**t) and loaded it with several extras (phone, vis pack, sensors etc) and only paid £21k. Where the hell has £29k come form? The new one's even got one less cylinder for god sake.TameRacingDriver said:
Wrong. Fail.
Can you tell me where the same design engine has been used before?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault-Nissan_Allian...
Maybe you'd be surprised how many renault parts bin components are shared?

The VQ is a Japanese engine designed by Nissan in Japan that happens to be used in a couple of Renaults, apparently.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault-Nissan_Allian...

The 350Z is a Japanese car, designed in Japan by Nissan, built in Japan by Nissan. There's bugger all French about it, even if they are an "alliance".
You can tell this because it doesn't break down every week, and feels like it is made out of metal and not chewing gum.
All great cars and I have driven them all.
If I was going to own one, and I cam very close to buying one, I would go for the Focus ST.
The £28K comment is all very well but in reality a car spec that high at Ford will still only cost you £24.5K. A similar spec M135i would cost about £33K, perhaps £31K with a discount, so the gulf widens enough for them not to be direct competitors.

I think BMW have really thrown a curve ball at the performance car world!
I don't.I think they've obviously been clever as you lot all seem to be jumping around about the 135i being a 30k car. However in reality no one buys a base spec BMW. Buyers expect a BMW to have a certain level of kit, especially a top of the range model like a 135i. Take a base spec car into a dealer to trade in and they will laugh at you. Try to sell it privately and no one will want it, or at least it will have to be a lot cheaper than the decent specced cars out there. Most BMW owners want toys, leather and the biggest alloys you can spec.
However plenty of people buy standard spec Fords, in fact i'd suggest most fords that are sold only have the standard spec.

The M135i is what I'd go for. Yeah it's a bit ugly, but I think most modern cars are ugly if I'm honest.
More importantly it's the only one with correct wheel drive and if its anything like the 135i coupe, 450bhp can be had for a grand.

Driven all three at various times and I think they're all great.
The one thing that did disappoint me a touch, however, was the level of torque steer in the Focus. Actually, I say that, it may have been the torque steer compensation system, but something was definitely loading the steering rather unpleasantly under acceleration. Off the throttle it was great, though.
A Focus ST with a proper mechanical LSD would be a force to be reckoned with.

Go on - Try a new Renault Sport, I think you're bitter after a two previous bad experiences and one of my friends also being stung to the tune of £2K of repairs on his just out of warranty Megane R26
Fixed that for ya! I'd have the Renault out of this group anyway. Enjoyed the review.

R26 is a few years old now :P
New ones have warranties. Old ones don't. I can't afford a new one. I can't afford to run an old one PS - Thanks for the afternoon banter it's made work slightly more bearable today.

they're not all bad as you seem to suggest every time somebody mentions a Renault recently.
What can I say. I'm (extremely) bitter.KMB said:
