THE best sound in the world..EVER?
Discussion
I will restrict this to things I have heard in person, and being a car nut they are engines:
1990 ish era Ferrari F1 V12 (before the revs got so high in the 90's)
Matra V12
90's turbo rally car through a stage with anti lag popping and banging etc, preferably in a wooded area
A highly tuned big V8, formula 5000 or a Lola T70 perhaps
it might sound boring to some, but I LOVE the sound of a DFV

Clinging to the side of a welsh hillside listening to the sound of these doing high energy low level manoeuvres only a couple of hundred feet away. Love it.

Some lovely sounds here and the 787 is one of my favourite sounding cars of all time.
In complete contrast is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lQX3cOAbes every time I hear that supercharger it makes me chuckle like a little boy!
Also Georg Plasa's (RIP) Judd BMW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-lbxIJD3V8 is something else IMO

I'm not sure if its that one or another go-around but there was a picture taken from the opposite end of the runway, its utterly brilliant because you can see the chaos the Vulcan caused - there are a load of sheep running any which way they can, some people stood up but doubled over, some people sat in chairs being knocked over, one is even caught midway between upright and sprawled over the floor Back to noise, some good calls here (V8s, Merlin, F355).
The only thing better than a V8 is a v8 running Nitromethane. You feel and smell it as much as you hear it.
It all starts when the whirr of the starter forces the top pulley around, gasoline is squirted in to the intake cylinders, bang.. the engine starts, the starter pulled away. After a while, if the crew is happy the fuelling is switched to "the high side", the smooth sound goes away, the revs drop and the exhausts now bellow a deep guttural cackle.
Gingerly the car moves forwards, throttle stop on the driver hits the throttle and the rear tyres erupt in smoke, somewhere between 1/4 and half track the car stops, and the driver selects reverse, the engine slightly above idle still cackles away back to the line. Throttle stop off, its all down to the driver now, after a few mind games with other driver its time go go, the driver hits full throttle, the clutch pack progressively engages as fuelling is stepped up, no gearbox, just a direct drive to the rear axle. 60 feet passes in less than a second, 100mph at this point, by half track just 2-2.5 secs after leaving the line, 270-280mph. You, stood in the crowd or sat on a bleacher are engulfed by a huge mechanical roar, the ground shakes, you feel a force hit your chest, even through earplugs you can still hear perfectly well, but then at 150db you should hear the engine, you can see the streaks of flame exiting the exhaust. As the car passes you the engine sound slightly diminishes, to be replaced by a loud mechanical hum.
You can't hear the fuel pump delivering as much as 300 litres a minute, nor the supercharger that is producing maybe 60psi.
4 seconds after it started, its all over - that odd lingering smell of partially burnt nitromethane hangs in the air, the car, now hard on the brakes, parachute out is bouncing along the shutdown area. You look at the timing board and smile, 300+ mph. It never gets old.
I haven't really found any videos that do the noise justice, you'll just have to get yourselves along to Santa Pd at the end of the month, meanwhile these give a tiny hint as to the noise:
Warm up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPHZEsKznWQ
Never fails to amuse me seeing ever fker jump when they blip it. I'm sure the crews do it on purpose

I am partial to a V8 so here's some almost NASCAR-esque ear bashing from a CTS-V (who's owner I think is a member here)
It doesn't sound super amazing on the approach, but as he passes and you get an earful of the exhausts it sounds the dogs danglies.

One of my favourite car videos on youtube. I have a secret love of the Cadillac CTS-V, it's so damn ugly yet it just looks so cool, and goes like stink. It doesn't sound super amazing on the approach, but as he passes and you get an earful of the exhausts it sounds the dogs danglies.

The owner of that car is indeed a member here, he is a US serviceman stationed at a UK base I believe, has had a couple of nice Yankee cars. He has a readers rides thread on the CTS-V.
I`ve heard all sorts of engines, piston, jet, rotary etc, but this !!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYOgsgnZ8dw Just an incredible sound. Can you imagine a mass survival scramble at the Lincolnshire bases The howl is awesome.

Did laugh at the camera guy following the path the lumbering B52 took on take off as he lost track of it behind the parked cars etc, then catching it in the corner of the frame on a steep climb after take off. Amazing machines.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYOgsgnZ8dw Just an incredible sound. Can you imagine a mass survival scramble at the Lincolnshire bases The howl is awesome.

I drove mine for the first time in 6 months on Wednesday. Tunnel, window down, bmw straight 6, cold air induction. There are better automotive sounds, but not in my budget. Not even close.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0gvqLZIQss
