looks like garvin knows more technical reasons, but my reasons are that the majority of wheels that size, including oem do not appear to be anywhere near strong enough on the inner rim.
i would say roughly 1 out of 3 sets over 18" diameter that come into my brothers place have at least one wheel cracked.these are repaired (by an outside contractor) by stop drilling and welding.
occasionally they can crack during tyre fitment, but the majority have a flat spot only on the inner rim (lack of material) that is directly opposite the crack.this flat spot is rarely replicated on the outer rim (more material) and we have yet to see an outer rim cracked.
the very low profile tyres used on these larger rims obviously excaberates the issue, they offer very little in the way of deflection on the uk dirt tracks, sorry roads ,we all drive, meaning most of the shock load gets transferred to the rim itself.

Jesus.
If ever there was a good reason for making a thread a sticky at the top of the board that's it.
Anyone getting wheels refurbed needs to know about what questions to ask.
feel free to put this information in a wheel refurb sticky if anyone thinks its a good idea.i would urge everyone to ask the question on how the old coating is stripped prior to getting their wheels done.
i do think most places use the dipping technique these days though.
