I was quite excited about the GT86 when details were first released, but having seen it, sat in it and seen the specs I'm not so sure.
- slower than the Fiesta: check
- less economical: check (I do about 13k miles pa)
- less secure / surefooted in bad weather: check (got the Caterham for tail out fun)
- more expensive: check (even 2nd hand ones are still more than a brand new ST)

Bottom line is I think they're overpriced for what they are.

How quick is a Fiesta then? Motor Trend clocked the FR-S (GT86 badged as a Scion in the US) at 6.2 sec 0-60mph. I didn't think the Fiesta was this sort of pace.

That said, you said you wanted fun. So is price really that important? And lets face it, a BMW 118i or 120i are both slower and both more money than the Fiesta.

MT clocked the Fiesta at 6.4s. Not much to choose between it and the GT86. Suspect the in-gear acceleration times would favour the Fiesta.

How about ignoring all the image nonsense and just appreciating them on their merits?
I do. That's why I don't drive one.

My Scottish roots mean I don't like spending more than I need to! I don't think fun is proportional to cost - so if I can have 90% of the fun for say 75% of the cost, I'll take the cheaper option.

The RS4 is a great all rounder - which is why I'm struggling with the idea of selling it. But it has the potential to start costing a lot more as the miles rack up (73k now) and 20ish mpg hurts when you're doing 13k miles pa. Still at the "thinking about it" stage though, and every time I have a great drive with a v8 soundtrack, I put the decision off. Sods law says one of the clutch / drc / oil cooler will fail before I get round to making a decision....

It tends to be cyclical. One minute, you want refined comfort, the next you want a hooligan than loves being thrashed.
I know that one, had an S13 decided I wanted a roadster so swapped it for a Eunos, while I had the Eunos I decided I wanted a T5, so bought an 850 T5. Loved that so much I bought an 850R. Then decided I had to have a hot hatch again, so bought a 182. Had that and decided it was too small, so bought a newage WRX estate, then decided I wanted a sportscar again so bought an S2k and 944.

Right now, I'm wanting another swede barge for the winter!!

My missus doesn't even try to keep up!!

Not sure I follow. In what real way is the Fiesta really more practical? What can it do that the GT86 can't?

I've travelled in the back of a GT86, and while it is better than you might imagine, I would be very disappointed to find as little space and comfort in the back of a Fiesta.

I have no idea. But is the Fiesta ST a 5 door?

Besides, if it's occasional use of the rear seats. Does it matter that much? The Fiesta might have marginally more room in the back, but it's hardly a limo if you are going to transport 4 people frequently.

Just comes down to whether you want proper rear seats or not. GT86 would be ok for occasional use, short journeys or kids. Fiesta ok for regular use, long journeys, adults.

As 'merk fan, you are of course fully aware that US mags test the cars under somewhat advantageous circumstances.

Some people grow out of the tending towards the more extreme end of things, while others simply get head on with different priorities.
I'd drive anything if I wanted to, regardless of age etc & my comfortably pensionable age old man enjoys trying & often giving the hot hatches I choose to drive the beans (in his own misguided way) when opportunity presents. Suits me and he enjoys it as a release from real world practicalities. Probably more manic than many here as well.

3 door only.
Rear seat room is pretty good because of the square shape.

If room were the criteria, then a Mondeo uses the same engine and, from my experience, returns the same mpg, being more aerodynamic and better-geared.

I was excited by the BRZ/GT86 when I first heard about it. I test drove a GT86. It was underwhelming. It should be better. The 370z is much much better.

I have had a GT86 for 1000 miles now and yes, it might need a few more BHP, but, having had cars with much more power I decided that it's wasted on the road now. The GT has a superb chassis that needs to be worked and when you 'get it' it really is that good. I totally agree that it might fell a bit crap on the test drive but once really drive the car its superb.

First proper moment - 91 mph over a crest..... not convinced about the Prius tyres bit god its fun

Yep - if the Toyota had a 250g/km V6 instead of a 180g/km flat four, they'd be having to give that away too.

Worse still, in some ways, a low powered Z4 2l 4 banger or a Merc SLK oiler confused.
Then there's the finance deals angle to chuck in as well.

Given these & majority of cars being bought on the back of faceless corp's monthly money, no wonder Nissan sell about 3 a year.

Interesting, How are more powerful cars "wasted on the road"? I'd rather have surplus power than not enough.
