You can see how much smaller cars were, back then.
Or most likely, that parking space is fecking huge.
I rarely got my 4 door escort saloon in a space at lakeside with that much ease

Hideous when new, hideous when old. And vastly overpriced. And has bad wheel trims.

Even the long-suffering Mrs Shed wouldn't be seen dead or alive in this, it would seem...!

Oh and cheap insurance for a first car
Epic commens.

So many youngsters moan about the insurance costs of their first cars. But they all pick "trendy" cars - Fiestas, Clio's etc etc.
These are hugely popular cars and, statistically, a lot of them have been in accidents.
This is very important for an insurer in formulating premium prices. If there are 1m 17 year olds driving around in mk6 Fiesta's and 37% of them have had accidents then the stats say it's likely to be in an accident - load the premium up!

I bet NO 17 year olds are driving about in a 1.3 crossflow 1995 Escort. No crash stats, no loading.

But buggered if you can get a teenager to drive around in an untrendy car. They're rather pay £3k insurance.

In Shed's defence, the national selection of sub-£1000 cars isn't exactly what it used to be. I'm sure the job was a lot easier a few years ago when you could still find anything from Jag XJRs to Honda Integras for this kind of money.

Kind of interesting looking way back through the archive at all the Rover SD1s v8s and Porsche 924s and the like. Gotta wonder when will be the next time so little money will give you such a great choice of cars.

Bought a cheap TD as a stop gap when I totalled my daily. Easily the worst car I have ever owned. I can't think of a single positive thing to say about it. The engine was particularly noteworthy for it's sh*tness. Even the dealer who was forced into accepting it as a trade in looked despondent...... despite a good deal.

No. My dad has Fords and won't look at anything else. Car history since I've been around is Escort (mk1 or 2), Hillman Avenger, Escort mk3, 2 Escort mk4s, Escort mk5, Focus mk2, Fiesta, currently looking for a new car this year, it's going to be the current or new model Fiesta. To be fair, the Fiesta is ok.

For me to own a Ford, it would have to be a really really good Ford.

The original top gear road test. Before chris evans this chap did top gear, but not sure what happened to him.... He was well known for liking Fords (some said he was paid by them)

Cant see it ever being worth much, but probably one of the best condition/lowest mileage cars you will find for under a grand.

I would like to say ideal first car but kids now are all driving around in brand new Polos and 1-series on finance. May be a nice car for someone to tootle to work and back?

Btw the fog light switch was split in half when front fogs were fitted, hence why with only rears fitted as in this boggo spec the button looks massive.
Thanks for the explanation.

LOL, exactly what I've just bought my 18 year old son as a first car, except in silver.
60K miles, full service history, everything replaced.
And yes the encore engine leaks oil from the cam cover gasket. Starts fisrt time, runs, has £24.80 new ditchfinder tyres on all around. Should be perfect. biggrin
Exactly my thoughts. If that won't promote a strong work ethic in an entitled 17/18 year old (not saying your son is entitled, I don't know him), then what will? wink My mum had a mk1 Ka which was a bit tinny but a decent drive and I actually looked at a similarly aged (maybe slightly older than this one, as it had the trout mouth) 1.8 LX as my first car but a 1.4 Astra, although not a great car either was streets ahead to drive!
