Car Snobs - I Despise Them
Discussion
I don't judge people based on the cars they drive. In any case it has nothing to do with their talents as drivers. I like to go on the occasional track day, and then you find out who is really good. I have many a time been passed by people in objectively slower cars.
What you have or do not have is not the same as who you are.

You haven't even finished university at 18 so shouldn't even be in a car.
Earliest someone should own a car is early to mid 20s......
Oh wait this is is PH.......
On another note, how can a Golf R owner be a snob? There is nothing positive, from an image point of view, about the Golf R.
The troll with two McLarens delivers again. I thought you said one was expected to own a £5m house whilst still a toddler, surely a car isn’t too much of a stretch from there??You haven't even finished university at 18 so shouldn't even be in a car.

I just got a price for my nearly 18yo son to drive an ST170 and he could nearly buy a Golf R for the same price. Who the hell is insuring the OP?
Nobody. Anyway he’s probably gone to bed by now, school in the morning. Audemars said:

Have no plans to go to uni, going into IT contracting in the Cyber Security field when I finish working towards my CEH.

you would have been a bloody hero when i was 18 with an ST170, i had to drive a bloody nova for my first year ...
Which was much better than my Ford Anglia 105e. Still at 18 I got a Fiat 125 which back then was pretty good for keeping up with Capris and Cortina GTs for about half the price.
But a Focus ST170 at 18 is quite an achievement - look on the brightside OP. You own it, and it's hardly going to depreciate, whereas those on a lease are just throwing money away!
I gave up on Fords when they gave up on RWD (after a Granada 2.8 Ghia, MKII Escort RS2000, Capri 2.8 Injection, another Capri 2.8 Injection, Granada Scorpio and Sierra Sapphire 2.0 GLSi) so now I have two straight 6 BMWs - but they aren't leased so hopefully I escape the snob label! (Mind you I don't really care if I don't).

Oh wait, maybe its different if you are a child protégé ? Which I assume is what you were? But not in the field of Geography (Bradford = Midlands ?)
OP, Honestly (and meaning no offense), you seem a little conflicted by this. I only say it because you make the negative comments about the leased Rs which is not too dissimilar to how you think some people view you / your car.
I like cars and motorbikes and all sorts. I can see something to really like about a leased Golf R (Its very unlikely I will ever have one, but I get why its a load of performance and practicality for little cost). I can also see plenty to like about the ST170 Focus. All that generation focus were a laugh to throw around and the 170 engine is fun due to it being such a revy unit (hard work but in a fun way).... Both are great in different ways.
Run what you like. Enjoy your car. Don't assume anything about people because of what they drive - that's a fools game.

Hey don't knock it.
I had my first ever sexual encounter in a viva. I was 17 and a bit and we had been talking about it for weeks but we never got a chance to be alone, there was always some family commitment or crisis that got in the way.
Anyway, It was August 1981 and we were coming back from grandad's funeral, I remember the car just skidding to a halt, I grabbed the dash and door and asked why she stopped. She didn't say a word. She just switched off the car, shuffled over to my side, stroked my forehead, kissed my eyelids and the top of my nose. I was sad and bloody excited at the same time! I felt really guilty because I should have been mourning, but I had waited months for this (it felt like years!). I wanted to say no, this is not the right time or location I dreamed about, but she put her fingers on my lips to stop me from talking and just whispered with incredibly hot breath "No need to say anything, it's okay, it's okay".
It was like a bloody film, I remember it like it was yesterday!
Obviously, I'm not going to tell you what happened, we are all adults here, and this is not one of those websites, but even if it was, I have too much respect for my grandma.

But are you saying your Grandma kissed you?
My wife is a car snob, i hate it....got a few nice cars, I often drive the smart car if nipping local (leather, air con, pan rof, heated seats, so not exactly slumming it) so flatly refuses and would get a taxi before "been seen dead driving it".. I couldnt care less having drove some absolute scrap in my younger years
I can honestly say that when I was ‘shedding’ with sub £1500 cars I never once had anyone look down on my car choices. I think you need new friends and acquaintances!
That being said, if you watch the Police Interceptor type programs they will often comment on an old, slightly tatty car as being ‘worth a look’. So there’s a fine line between appreciating the value for money of nice, old motors and also looking like you’re in a pool car for the local scumbags. I suppose keeping it in good condition and standard spec helps to avoid any confusion and I never had any issues.
