Always wanted a blue sr but ended up with an Xs 205, which was superb.

Mate had a 1.5 td nova which went surprisingly well.

It was also how I learned to manage lift off oversteer.

£16,000 for a 1.3l Vauxhall? Really? Maybe it's cause I wasn't around at the time, but that seems utterly ludicrous even by the standards of today's market. There's plenty of stuff on SOTW I'd prefer to run than this thing.

Sold it at the age of 20 and bought this in 1990, it was somewhat faster.

Drove it like I had stolen it most of the time.

Very much this

The same chatter will be spouted about present day Swift Sports and Up Gtis in 35 years time
More likely Ibiza FRs, they've pretty much become the modern Nova. I do quite like a clean, red Nova. Had I been there at the time, it would've been a 1.4S Fiesta for me though.

I beat that, getting a 5 week ban for getting tugged at 108, in my first car, a Saxo VTR. laugh

Flared arches ? Power ? How about a twin-engined Corsa/Nova pumping 1.000 + hp to all 4 wheels ?

The Boost Beast, an anglo-german collaboration, is alive & kicking after all these years,

the 2 Calibra turbo engines have been steadily developed and the car has run over 20.000miles,

topping at 200+ mph on the Autobahn and doing low 9s on the quartermile.

Like a few Vauxhall/Opels of that era, they achieved top speed in 4th gear, 5th was just an overdrive type of thing to give reasonable cruising revs

Plus, you know if it managed 104 on the Millbrook Bowl ( as per the earlier test ) then 106/107 was on with a suitably long straight. Crazy stuff!

It's a case of "you had to be there".

Through a modern objective lens they are about as tasty as a st sandwhich, with st sauce, served with a large side of st.

For those of a certain vintage they were amazing. I would have traded various family members for one and when a friend's not unattractive mother acquired the later GSi i would frequently make sure I was present when he was collected to drink in the milf/motor combo. It was like Linda Lusardi arriving in a Countach.

I want to cry... no seriously I do.

Between 1995 and 2002 at various stages I owned

1 x Nova SR
1 x Nova GTE
1 x Nova GSi
1 x Astra GTe
1 x Astra SRi
1 Cavalier Mk2 SRI 130
1 x XR3i Cabiolet
2 x Fiesta XR2 Mk2
2 x Pug 205 GTi
1 x Golf GTi Mk1
1 x Range Rover Classic V8 Vogue SE

Almost all of which were moved on for 3 figure sums, despite being (generally) very tidy examples....... (one highlight being the XR2 I swapped for a Kenwood 6 disc CD changer!)

It wasn't just me though, all of my friends had similar cars (including one who owned 3 Nova Sports, 2 at the same time) and all were sold for a tiny fraction of their worth now......
If only we'd had an inkling of the way the market would go I'd have kept every single one of them!!
You think that's bad. I had a MK1 RS Mexico - white with a blue stripe - I bought it for £350 and sold it to get a Sunbeam Ti.

Have you read the rest of my post? I'm deliberately sending up 'modern objective' opinion and then saying I like them.

They’re a very crisp, smart design. I never went down the Nova path, my Dad did get as a secondary runaround a Leaf (read Saag Indian curry) Green 1.2 2 door saloon which he was considering putting a red top in with brakes and suspension to match (these are pre-Max Power days) sleeper style. It only got as far as some Monroe gasmatics, but following the then RAC Rally through Wales in it showed it to be a fantastic car, more so because it looked st. It didn’t have the nice blistered arches of course. I really wanted that as my first car but it wasn’t to be, and even Nova 1.2 insurance at 17 was not reasonable.

I still love the idea of a leaf green saloon Nova.

ETA, it got replaced with a new white GTE, which was excellent too.

Loved my Novas...never managed to get above the 1.2 though with insurance costs... frown

Nice little mod on the 1.2s though - fit a GTE/GSi rear anti roll bar and leave front alone - dialled out loads of the understeer and made them super lift off oversteery - huge fun - coupled with a Courtenay Suspension kit and mine was like a GoKart - haven't had a car that handled like that since!

Talking of which, I seem to remember the 1.3 had a fair bit of rally success in its class.
