Ferrari 458. End thread.

I remember one of the old Clarkson videos, where he was in the USA, at Willow Springs. He had an old Bullitt-type Mustang going round (GT390?), then a modern Ferrari (430 maybe?). The Mustang sounded good with it's lazy burble, but the Ferrari sounded almost musical by comparison. Can't find it on YT sadly.

While the old, lazy V8s have a certain appeal, there is just no comparison next to something flat-plane and high-revving. All in my opinion of course.

The S62 in the E39 M5 is probably one of the best V8's made. Thinking about it, I am tempted to take my vote for the S65 back as the S62 was an absolute howler at full chat, even if it (only) went to 7500rpm. Much better sounding than any of the V8's from then and probably from now.
I had an E39 M5 for 5 years and whilst the engine is an absolute belter, the standard exhaust is too muted. With a proper exhaust it does make the grade, although sadly most people just modify the backboxes which 'usually' results in a less than spectacular V8 fartnote.
Exhaust is definitely muted in many BMW M5's, even the E60, but from the inside it makes a wonderful roar when accelerating.

I can’t answer that but all I know is that after having spent 11 days in the states surrounded on all sides by V8s, I got tired of the incessant noise pretty quickly.
Maybe cars aren't for you.

Cross-plane - primary & second balance but not torsionally balanced (hence the requirement for a harmonic balancer).

Musical equivalent: Any piece of swing/jazz music.

Flat plane - secondary imbalance at twice the crank frequency.

Musical equivalent: The guitar solo at the end of The Chain.

I was going to go with a classic, the Lambourghini Countach from the intro to Canonball Run (or Canonball Run 2 - the intro sequences are functionally identical!), but it's a bloody V12... Oops.

Big block Chevy in a McLaren M8 .

Or ,if you are a stranger to the corner, then about half of the entry at Santa Pod

Or , if you a real purist , a 1.5litre Coventry Climax V8

Road cars? Meh .

I remember when I was a teenager and saw and heard a TVR 400SE drive past me. I was just amazed by the sound and thought I'll get one of those one day.

I bought a 350i and thought that sounded good then I got a 400SE with a sports exhaust. I've never heard a car like it. Just awesome.
I had the same experience with the same model of car!
It led me to buying a succession of TVRs.
I'm another fan of the Rover V8 in a TVR - mine was a 350i with sports exhaust. Quite slow, but didn't it sound good!

I thought we’d all agreed it was TVR and Aston.... I mean, the Italian stuff is ok, but it’s not as epic is it? I mean it’s ok, but it’s not proper awesome is it? Well it isn’t, is it.... and the American stuff is just vulgar.... surely we can all agree on that smile

Back in 2006 at LeMans 24 hrs I heard a Spyker at full chat and that sticks in my mind - didn't sound road legal loud, so no idea if the exhaust was standard. Sadly, a bit of a rarity, even if it was a humble Audi at heart.
